Rose Rolls

These pretty rolls are guaranteed to be a hit, they look so pretty it’s almost a shame to eat them! But they don’t just LOOK good they taste amazing too!! Soft buns with a delicious filling, I have used my Creamy Chicken Filling for these, but you can use any filling of your choice. Even crumbled feta and spinach works beautifully!
For a cheesy version, check out my Pizza Roses recipe.
Servings 15 Rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose/plain flour
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp powdered milk optional
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • 1 egg plus one for glazing
  • 1 tsp castor/grinded sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder to reduce any yeasty smell

Instructions

  • First, prepare your filling of choice. Creamy Chicken Filling
Next, prepare the dough. I have used the Chicken Bread dough
In a bowl mix the following ingredients together: 4 cups flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. castor sugar, 2 tbsp. milk powder, 1 tbsp. yeast, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 4 tbsp. oil and 1 egg, knead to a medium soft dough with slightly warm water, leave to rise for 1 hour. Divide the dough into 15-16 sections and shape them into neat balls.
Now you can start shaping the Roses. Roll out each ball to about 4″ diameter. Brush a bit of butter on the circle of dough. Make 4 diagonal slits, leaving the center intact. Add your filling in the center. Take one of the sections and cover the side of the filling with it. Take the opposite side’s section and cover the other side of the filling with it. Repeat with the two last sections, pinching the dough on the side to seal it. Repeat until all rose-rolls are ready.
For step by step instructions, please click HERE.
Place the prepared rolls on a greased tray. Pre-heat your oven to 180 C. Brush each rose gently with egg yolk mixed with a tsp. of milk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until tops are golden and rolls are ready.
Remove and brush them with melted butter. Keep them covered until time of serving so they stay soft.
These can be served as is, with a chutney of choice, or as an accompaniment with any meal or soup.
    Enjoy! 🙂

  3. Assalamualaikum,
I’ve tried this recipe.. bt i think the bread wasn’t that soft.. and moreover after it got baked the bottom of it became very hard nd somewhat burnt.. every time i baked something it’ll have the same effect.. can u pls help me out..

    1. W/Salaam, could be that the dough is not kneaded enough, or you may not be preheating the oven, or overbaking the bread. The heat from the bottom of your oven must be too high for it to burn, so either reduce the heat from below or raise the tray one notch higher in the oven. Please check this note for more suggestions: How to get soft breads.

    1. If you have baked before in your microwave then yes you can. I personally never bake in the microwave so cannot be sure on the results for that.

  4. Salaam wa alaikum. Fauzia ur website is so helpful and you have explained everything in detail. Thankk you so much. Inshallah I will try Rose Rolls tomorrow. Thanks a ton.

  5. Hi Fauzia

Thank you do much for this recipe. I made it and it has come out lovely.

I’m not sure how to attach a picture to this email.

    Thx
    Shabina x

  6. Is powdered milk, the same milk powder we use for rass malai. Jazakallah. I want to try these tomorrow as I have given family members dawat for iftaar

  7. with the yeast in this recipe as we have disccusd in the chicken filled buns that mix yeast with warm water can we also do that in this recipe. and do i have to increse yeast in this method too as you have mentioned in the other recipe n if so how much by jazakallah sorry to bother you

    1. Yes you can, for this recipe no need to increase the yeast, same 1 tbsp will be fine.

  8. Salaams, hope ur well, just came across the website n tempted by the rose rolls, could I do sweet filling instead? And if so, would I have to change some measurements in the dough? Sugar etc? Also do u have any suggestions for a sweet filling? JazakAllah for ur time.

    1. W/Salaam, yes you can use a sweet filling like chocolate or jam, or a date and nut filling. Anything you like! The dough can remain the same or you can increase the sugar by adding up to 2 tbsp extra for a slightly sweeter dough.

  9. salaam fauzia, ramazan mubarak, hope the fast are going well.
sister just wanted to ask that can i exclude the milk powder.
    w/salaam

    1. W/Salaam, and Ramadhan Mubarak. Yes you can omit the milk powder and use regular fresh milk instead.

  10. Salaams, Fauzia I made ur Rose Rolls…and believe me they turned out exactly like yours. I did a little bit of variation in the chicken filling…and the taste is just excellent. Jazakallah.

  11. Salaams, Fauzia I made ur Rose Rolls…and believe me they turned out exactly likr yours. I did a little bit of variation in the chicken filling…and the taste is excellent. Jazakallah.

  12. Salam
can we freeze dem if yes den how ??n serve dem nxt day??or we have to prepare on same day to be served ???

  13. Salaams Fauzia! How do you think this would taste with a fruit filling?
I’m not sure if the fruit and bread would be a good combo.

    1. W/Salaam, I know jam goes well with bread, so a jam or marmalade filling would be great. Therefore a fruit filling might not be a bad idea, maybe try that with just a small amount of the recipe and see how you like the results.

    1. Could mean you added too much water. You can sprinkle a bit of flour and keep kneading until it loses it’s stickiness. Next time add the water gradually.

  14. Salam and Ramzan Mubarak Fauzia
I love your website. Its amazing. All the recipes are ek se badh kar ek hai. Btw can we substitute this dough with short crust pastry or puff pastry?

    1. W/Salaam, thank you! Yes you can use puff pastry although I find it works best with dough.

  15. Salaams Fauzia, these look so good.. such that i was tempted to cook them!!!! and, am making them!!!! will post the pictures to you on facebook, InshAllah!!!!!

  16. by plain flour u mean the chakki ataa which comes to our house???or white flour?? or maida??

    1. Unfortunately YES for this recipe yeast is imperative. Nothing can substitute it!

  17. Asalamualikum wr wb wm..is thr any way in which we can cook the rose rolls in Micro wave Oven.i have a microwave oven and a gas stove oven but not the conventional oven..can u please guide to cook these rose rolls in either of the above way..waiting for your reply

    1. W/Salaam, I personally have never used microwaves for baking/cooking as I don’t believe that long-duration cooking in them is healthy, however for the gas stove oven I would assume the same temp and time should be fine. Have you ever baked in it before, and if so, what time and temperature do you normally use for say a cake? If you have then I can be in a better position to estimate based on your response.

  18. Asalam aleikum,
how are you.I made the rose rolls last week with a mince meat filling and it turned out great.i want to make them with the feta and spinach filling.could you please tell me how to make that.

    thanks

  19. Salams Fauzia! I got a chance to make these rolls yesterday and they turned out to be a super hit with my family, Alhamdulillah! I made 2 batches (using active dry yeast which was first activated in some warm water and sugar), one using the exact same ingredients as you posted, and one without the egg and milk powder for my son who has allergies to egg and milk-and both batches turned out great! Thank you once again for your inspirational recipes!

  20. Oh and I also made your creamy chicken filling for these rolls, which was soooo tasty! For my son who is allergic to milk, I substituted the milk in the filling with chicken yukhni (stock) that I made when boiling the chicken and this also turned out very delicious, Alhamdulillah! 🙂

  21. salam fauzia
i have tried your rose rolls recipe that was great…
thanks for such a beautiful and delisious recipe

  22. AOA. These look lovely, but I need to ask something- do we need to let the rolls rise after shaping them, or do we bake them directly after glazing?

  23. Assalamalaikum. I did’nt find instant yeast anywhere at my locality. I just have dry active yeast. all I know is dry active yeast has to be soaked in warm water before using. can you please guide me through this. would be very grateful to you. thanks 🙂 hoping an early reply from you.

  24. Hi. I want to try these out, however, four cups flour is too much for an experiment. I’d like to try it with only one cup. But there is just one egg, which i can’t split like the rest of the ingredients. Can I omit the egg altogether or is there a substitute?

  25. Salaam… I want to try your rose and pizza rolls. Do ou think I can us ready made pastry puff sheets? I do make triangles stuffed with mince meat stuffing.

  26. I recently started visiting your website and i really liked it. i want to try this rose rolls but i have a doubt can i cook it in a convention oven. the problem with my oven is it doesnt have grill down. only on all 3 sides. so should i turn the rose upside down once it gets cooked on the top. kindly help. i amplanning to make it tomorwo.

  27. Thanks dear. Try baking them for about 15-17 minutes, then check if they need to be turned over to do the other side.

  28. Slm Sis, these look like very tasty snacks, just want to know can they be frozen? and if so how long can they be left for? I usually make a similar snack using puff pastry which lasts awhile.

  29. Salaam, I tried this recipe but the rolls was raw inside. Also the dough did not rise after 1 hr. Should I keep more time? Can I use active dried yeast? For 2 cups flour, how much active dried yeast should I use?

  30. assalamo alikum,
my sister made those rose buns on eid and they were so yumy… i need to ask if its ok to add yeast after being rised in luke warm milk…what difference it makes to recipe if we pre-rise it or just add it directly(as done in this recipe). thanks

    1. W/Salaam, thanks!! It depends on the type of yeast used. I use instant, so it doesn’t need to be added to liquid. If you’re using active dry then yes you need to add it to warm water to help it get activated.

  31. slms,
i made these rolls for ramadan and they turned out really nice and i was quite impressed with their appearance.just wanted to ask how do i give them a tint of red color so it actually looks like a rose.i mean do i add color to the dough r color it wen they are shaped n just about to go in the oven.
    jazakallahukhairun

    1. W/Salaam, thanks! Colour the dough or the water/liquid used when kneading the dough.

  32. I made these but the taste of these roll was so bad… im not talking of the chicken filling inside, it was good…well the bread tasted like eating raw yeast! i wonder why? i left the dough to rise for 1 hr and did as the recipe said so and i used the brand saf instant yeast. Please help!!!what went wrong?

  33. That is so strange, never heard of that happening before. Was the yeast good? Did you test it to check if it was fine? Has it passed the expiration date?

  34. i did half my recipe to 2 cups of flour..and arnd 1/2 tbsp yeast..expiratiom date was 2013 so that was not a problem.. weren’t u suppose to add instant yeast directly to the flour? how do u test yeast?

  35. Yes the yeast is added directly to the flour. But you can test a small amount to see if it is working the way it should. Even yeast that has not reached the expiry period can sometimes not work well. Please read this note. Yeast

  36. AOA Fauzia,
thank you for sharing your recepies, they looks really good, and step by step pictures, makes it easier.
my question to you is, are we supposed to dissolve instatt yeast in warm water before we mix it with other ingredients, please if you can make it clear to me would be very helpful
thank you for your time once again
    regards
    Khadija

    1. W/Salaam, thank you. Nope, instant yeast is added DIRECTLY into the flour. That is why it is known as instant. Active yeast is the one that needs to be mixed in water.

  37. Hiii…i wanted to know if i can make the rolls a day befor th part n keep in th fridge nt freezer in order its soft n little more bakin required..vil it taste as fresh as first day?

    1. Hi, yes you can make them the day before, just bake them three-quarters of the way then remove cool and freeze until needed. When ready to serve, brush them with butter and bake until done.

      1. Salam..thanx alot fauzia for the reply..ur help is a great bless for us..i m always excited to try ur new recipes..so easy yet so delicious..i made th rose rolls yesterday..i didnt put egg..my buns were nt so soft..they were crisp from out n little soft from inside..i vil try thm again inshallah..thankuu soo much for ur recipes..

  38. Salams Fauzia….
I made rose rolls yesterday they are superb…
My hubby & two kids realy love them. Thanks for your reciepies. I have a question for u….
If i keep the dough all over the night is it ok or may be any different in the taste(yeast smell)…?
once again thank u very much….

    1. W/Salaam, overnight is ok, any longer and yes the dough will end up smelling yeasty. Best to bake and freeze then warm up when needed.

  39. Sis..as-salam ualaikum..

Are they supposed to be crispy?

    1. Hi, no these should be very
Hi, no these should be very soft. If they turned out hard it could mean you either over-baked them or did not knead the dough enough.

    Salam Fauzia

I made these rose rolls and they turned out so cute 🙂 but the edges opened up while they were still in the oven. I pinched the edges when shaping them but I think it wasn’t sticky enough. What can I do so they don’t open up the next tie?

    Thanks

    1. W/Salaam, the main thing is
W/Salaam, the main thing is to make sure the dough is slightly sticky. If it isn’t then try dabbing a bit of water on your fingertips and then pinch the dough, that will help soften it and hopefully the petals will stick. 🙂

    1. Hi! It’s generally difficult
Hi! It’s generally difficult to estimate how much water/milk is needed exactly as different flours absorb differently and different altitudes affect absorption rates. Mix half a cup of milk with half a cup of water. Warm it up, then gradually add and knead the dough. Use as much as it will take to get the dough to a soft and smooth consistency. You may need more water/milk or you may not need to use all. Once you’ve got the hang of it with your particular brand of flour, you will know for sure for next time.

    1. Hi, sounds like you are
Hi, sounds like you are either not kneading the dough enough, using too little liquid during kneading or overbaking the breads for longer than the recommended temperature. Try to ensure your dough is very very soft, use warm liquid when kneading, preheat your oven before baking and do not over bake the bread. Keep them covered after baking.

W/Salaam, thank you! I personally never bake in the microwave so am not sure how the temp and time conversion will be as opposed to baking in a regular oven. Sorry! But if you normally bake in your microwave then it should be fine, follow your usual method.
