Rose Rolls - Step by Step

These pretty rolls are guaranteed to be a hit, they look so pretty it’s almost a shame to eat them! But they don’t just LOOK good they taste amazing too!! Soft buns with a delicious filling, I have used my Creamy Chicken Filling for these, but you can use any filling of your choice. Even crumbled feta and spinach works beautifully!
Servings 16 Rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose/plain flour
  • 1 tbsp. instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp. powdered milk optional
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 4 tbsp. oil
  • 1 egg plus 1 for glazing
  • 1 tsp. castor/grinded sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder to reduce any yeasty smell

Instructions

  • For a cheesy version, check out my Pizza Roses recipe.
First, prepare you filling of choice:  Creamy Chicken Filling
  • Next prepare the dough.
  • In a bowl mix together the following ingredients: 4 cups flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. castor sugar, 2 tbsp. milk powder, 1 tbsp. yeast, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 4 tbsp. oil and 1 egg, knead to a medium soft dough with slightly warm water, leave to rise for 1 hour.
  • STEP 1: Divide the dough into 15-16 sections and shape them into neat balls.
  • STEP 2: Now you can start shaping the Roses. Roll out each ball to about 4″ diameter.
  • STEP 3: Brush a bit of butter on the circle of dough. Make 4 diagonal slits, leaving the center intact.
  • STEP 4: Add your filling in the center.
  • STEP 5: Take one of the sections and cover the side of the filling with it.
  • STEP 6: Take the opposite side’s section and cover the other side of the filling with it.
  • STEP 7 & 8: Repeat with the two last sections.
  • STEP 9: Pinch the dough on the side to seal it.
  • Repeat until all rose-rolls are ready.
  • STEP 10: Place the prepared rolls on a greased tray.
  • STEP 11: Pre-heat your oven to 180 C. Brush each rose gently with egg yolk mixed with a tsp. of milk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until tops are golden and rolls are ready.
  • STEP 12: Remove and brush them with melted butter. Keep them covered until time of serving so they stay soft.
  • These can be served as is, with a chutney of choice, or as an accompaniment with any meal or soup. Enjoy! 🙂

  4. a must try for everyone ! They were delicious but Not well shaped.. God bless 🙂

  5. Hi Fauzia,

This is a brilliant recipe! I tried it today…I had one problem though – the rolls were raw on the inside. I baked at 180 C. I turned the temperature down for the 2nd batch to see if that would help but the rolls were still raw inside. What can I do about that?

    1. Roll out the dough a bit thinner next time, and make sure you do not over-fill the roll when adding the mixture. Also, make sure your oven temp is correct, sometimes ovens run hotter than what the temperature you set them to indicates.

  6. This looks gorgious and am sure will be delicious too. I will try to make these and give you my feed back.

  7. ssalam fauzia

  9. Salaams fauzia, I had a question, why does this recipe have powdered milk and the chiken buns don’t have the powder milk, are they both different recipes or can we use th chiken bun recipe for the rose rolls.? Jazakallah

    1. W/Salaam, the powdered milk helps make sure the rolls are fluffy. You can omit if you like.

  10. Hi Fauzia… i wanted to know if i can use 2 tablespoon of fresh milk instead of milk powder???

  21. Aslm..tempted to try this but 16 rose rolls too much for 2 of us.. So planning to make with 1 cup flour…could u help me by telling if I can omit egg or no. Tbsp of beaten egg I can use

    1. W/Salaam, yes you can omit egg and use 1 tbsp yoghurt in place of the egg. Otherwise use 1 tbsp beaten egg.

    1. Yes you can, someone already has and sent in her results..they were perfect.

  22. salam
    dear fouzia
i have baked these rolls on stove top n it cooked really awesome ….. thanx for such a nice recipe…..

  23. Salam, jazakilLah for all you are doing. Please Fauzia’s, what quantity of ingredient can I use for two cups of flour for the rose rolls? Please how do I ensure the rolls are not raw inside? Sometimes my baking gets burnt underneath, pls how do I avoid this? Thank you.

    1. W/Salaam, for 2 cups, divide all the other ingredients in half. Check that your oven is not just heating from the bottom, and place your tray in the center of the oven to avoid the breads from burning from below.

  24. salams fauzia i tried the rose rolls today.they were perfect.just a query that i made the roses in the afternun n then baked them just before iftari time but the roses had glown up from.the original size that i had first made cos of the yeast.soo can i after making the roses freeze it so that it does not glow up will that help n bake after 2 hrs??

    1. W/Salaam, better bake them then store until needed, you can always warm them up and serve.

  25. thabx fauzia.so can i just bake them n cover them in a vessel and when i serve i just apply sum butter n serve ??

    1. Apply the butter immediately when they come out of the oven. Then cover with a towel.

  26. Asw,hope ur fine plz suggest I can substitute plain flour, all purpose flour to whole wheat flour nd it wil become soft or not plz reply soon how many messages I had send 2u but no answer plz reply ma’am I want 2make for Iftar nd how can we store it

    1. W/Salaam, Taskeen you have only sent one comment before this one and it was under the mini pizza. regarding tomato paste. That comment was responded to. Am not sure what you mean when you say you say you sent many messages, but none of them were posted on this website, this is the first time you are posting regarding the rolls. Yes you can make with whole wheat but the result will not be as soft as with AP flour. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for a day or freeze for up to 4 weeks.

  27. Assalamualaikum fauzia…i wanted to ask can we make dinner rolls with the leftover dough of roses rolls?..if yes then at what temperature should we bake them and for how long?..Jazakallah 🙂

  28. firstly fauzia… u r just awesome…thanks a lot for such a gr8 recipes..unfortunatley my oven is not working so can i deep fry rose rolls?

  29. Thanks dear. I would not recommend frying these. Try using the baking without an oven option listed in the categories.

  30. hey i loved ur idea, but can i replace anything else instead of using eggs especially to give it a shine!! thanks

  31. I wanted to use feta cheese and spinach filling… Should i use boiled spinach and what quantities of both of them?

    1. Steam/wilt the spinach then squeeze out all excess water. Add spices to your taste and crumble feta, mix it into the spinach and toss together. The ratio should be equal amounts when mixed (or again, to your preference).

  32. mashallah made them today and they were so scrumptioud, thank you soooooo much for this receipe xx

  33. Salams fauziya thnx for da wndrfl recipies..they r ol fantastic…cn i use minced meat instd of chicken for da filling?

    1. W/Salaam, thank you. You had asked the question on 1st August under the recipe of Chicken Malai Boti, and I replied there the following day. Please check back where you posted to see the reply. You can email the pic to me at fauziaskitchenfun@hotmail.com. Thank you!

  35. Salaam, when I use instant yeast I always disolve with some warm water then add to flour. Never tried it like this but will try. Thank you looks like a lovely recipe.

    Ws

    1. W/Salaam, instant yeast doesn’t need to be activated by dissolving in water. Dry/active yeast does.

  36. salams,mrs.fauzia,
tried the rose rolls, things were ok upto the baking part, but it took more than half an hours time to get the rolls done and the inner layers were found to be a bit uncooked.and it was rough on the surface too.pls, enlighten me on getting the rolls evenly baked and softer as well.jazakalla….

    1. W/Salaam, sounds to me like maybe the baking temperature is a bit on the high side, making the bread harden on the outside when it isn’t done yet inside. Lower the temp a bit, and make sure you knead the dough very very well until smooth to avoid the rough surface.

  37. hi dear just to day I get to know ur site I am impresed this recipe of urs looks awesome I am sure it will taste good also hts off for this beautiful creation thanx Isaw it on fase book pasted by someone else.

  38. Assalam Fouzia, ur recipes n methods r very good n easy to follow. Today was first that I saw ur site n ur rose rolls made me tempted to try n telling you thy came out great just that I didn’t pinch the sides well☺ rest all thy we’re great… Lots of dua n luv ur site a lot …. Allahafiz

  39. salam sis ur doing wonderfull job keep it up…. can u tell me how much of these roses can we make out of this recipie thanx

    1. W/Salaam, have written how many the recipe yields, please check the top of the recipe.

    1. Depends to what temp you need to preheat. Normally there is an indicator to show you it has sufficiently preheated to the desired temp. 180 C takes about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the oven.

  40. ur all dishes r superb…fauzia pl tell me the how to make self raising floor at hime….qtity

    1. Castor sugar is grinded regular sugar. If you are using Instant yeast as mentioned in the recipe, just add it directly. If you’re using Active Dry yeast then you ahve to mix it in a bowl with warm water first, then let it froth before using. Read this note please. Yeast

  41. Salaam,

I know a similar question was asked and answered already but for the spinach filling, would you suggest cooking the spinach with the same masalas as reqular spinach salan (as in frying onions and all) or keep it simpler?

I’d also like to thank you for adding so much excitement in cooking with all these fun dishes!

    Thank you!

      1. Thank you for the prompt reply!
I see the link you included calls for fresh spinach, can I get away with frozen packaged spinach, making sure its dry once cooked?
Also do you have links to any other veggie fillings for this particular roll?

        Thanks again!

    1. W/Salaam, depending on how many you plan on serving per person, either halve the recipe or quarter it. Or just make the lot and freeze the leftovers for next time.

  42. Salam Fauzia,
I have tried these roses and they came out really good. These roses are not crispy.I wanted to try a recipe which makes little bit crispy. Please help me.
    JZK

    1. W/Salaam, rolls are supposed to be soft. But since you want yours crispy, either use puff pastry or roll the dough out thinner and/or bake it slightly longer.

  43. Salam Fauzia,
just walked to the grocery store (Sobey’s) to buy Yeast and didn’t see that the receipe required powdered milk too. Can I work without the Powdered Milk?

  44. Asalam o alaikum….

Fauzia i tried the rose rolls today…the dough was a bit sticky…was the flour less or did I use water more than was required? i let it rise but still had to oil my hands time n again ..My chicken bread didn’t get the proper criss cross as the dough was slipping and was sticky.. please guide me as I will try them again tomorrow…

    1. W/Salaam, sounds like you added too much water! Always add the water gradually as you knead, adjusting as and when needed.

  45. Dear Fauzia, I tried the Roze Rolls for Iftar today. They were a super hit. I am not too good with baking so was a little apprehensive but wow they were super. Thanks so much. I am now officially your most devoted fan.

  46. can i omit this step : Brush each rose gently with egg yolk mixed with a tsp. of milk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds?

  47. Looks amazing hence i tried this out 2 but mine open up when its baked (i pinched them together!)

    1. You need to make the dough soft and a bit sticky so when you pinch it together, it sticks and seals. Or dab a bit of water next time before pinching together.

  48. Hey, I am 15 years old and my mom told me to try making this. It was SUPER easy and I tried it !! they turned out amazing! i also have a question, is milk powder necessary??what does it help do?

    1. Hi and well done!! The milk powder helps add softness to the dough, but it can be omitted. Just use fresh milk instead.

  49. Thank you for a deliciously delightful and effulgent range of recipes. May allah BLESS you in both worlds for your spirit of sharing…ameen!

  50. Sallaams fauziya masha Allah I tried the rose rolls and it came out beautiful, followed all your instructions, and it’s interesting too, I enjoying going thru your recipes, may Allah bless you for all the effort in sharing.

  51. ASAK. Amazing! I loved the roses so, festive! Would like to know if the can be made ahead and frozen. If so , how long do they need to thaw before baking.
Why do my breads get dark brown on the bottom? help!
    Ruqia

    1. W/Salaam, thanks. Yes you can, freezing tips given in comments above. Your oven must be over-heating from the bottom, try raising the tray slightly higher in the oven or reduce the heat coming from the bottom.

  52. Mashaallah…….! I got to knw u recently,bt u really superb…..! While baking is al oven temperature vil b same,y cz I had made ,bt it becomes hard,so plz help me……

  53. I tried these..!! turned out amazing!! Ma sha Allah you are superb!! 🙂

    I have a question… Can i make them into smaller sizes??…using the same quantity…

or will it affect the baking?? if the sizes are small..
    🙂

  54. Thanks! Yes that is perfectly ok, you can make them smaller. They will bake slightly faster than the bigger ones so keep an eye on them as they bake.

  55. W/Salaam, yes you can use dry yeast but please read this note on how to activate dry yeast: Yeast

Have never used the microwave for baking, so cannot help there.

  56. Hi sis…..can i use lactogen powder for de milk powder in dis recipe ??n can i use microwave oven fr baking????n can u pls share some sweet fillng vid us fr dis recipe…..pls kindly rply…..thanks

    1. Hi, isn’t lactogen baby formula? If so then NO do not use that, better to omit the ingredient if you do not have it at home. I never bake in the microwave so cannot know how that will turn out. Step by step photo link is included in the recipe.

    1. Bake and refrigerate…warm them up when you will be serving them. If storing them for longer than a day, pack them well and freeze.

  57. Fantastic its very nice 2 c here specially the availabilty of ingredients for pakistani people are in their own markets

Hi and thank you! Ameen to your dua. I make sure the oven grill is turned on during the last few minutes of baking (actually my oven turns on the grill automatically during baking). If yours needs to be turned on manually, do that during the last few minutes to give your bread/buns a good colour. 🙂

    Aoa fauzia,
I tried these rose rolls yesterday. My electric oven is smaller in size n hence can bakeonly 4 at a time. Meanwhile I shaped all the roses with the rest of the dough. They started to rise and opening up before baking. What do u suggest I shud do? Shape them just before putting in the oven or is there any other way to avoid this problem?
The end result was too good, tasted yummy. It’s just that they didn’t maintain the shape and the outermost layer/Patel was open.
