Yoghurt Bread Rolls

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, the yeast, the honey and the warm water. Stir well and let sit for 10 minutes, until slightly foamy.

Stir in yogurt, vegetable oil, salt and 2 cups of the remaining flour. Gradually stir in more flour until you have a soft dough that sticks together pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead, adding additional flour if necessary to prevent sticking, until dough is smooth and elastic, or about 5 minutes. Place in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 180 C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Turn risen dough out of bowl and onto a lightly floured surface. Gently deflate, pressing into a rectangle. Divide dough into 10 even pieces with a board scraper or a pizza cutter. Shape each piece into a round roll. Place on prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.

Once all rolls have been formed, press down firmly on each one to flatten. Cover with a clean dish towel and let rise for 25 minutes. Make slits on the top with a sharp knife (purely decorative so it's not a must to do this)

Bake for about 20 minutes, until rolls are deep golden on the top and the bottom.

Cool on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container.  Enjoy!

  1. Asalam alaykum fauzia,if i may ask,how do you shape the buns into a round ball?

    1. W/Salaam, simply cut a piece of dough and gather it to form a round shape using your hands.

    1. Strange, these turn out very soft normally. Did you over-bake them by any chance? What temp and duration of baking did you use? And did you knead the dough well?

  3. AA dear, how r u? when i use egg for brushing before baking, sometimes the baked stuff smells of eggs, how can i avoid this?

    1. W/Salaam, try using very fresh eggs. Use the yolk only and you can add 1 tsp milk to it. Mix it well then brush a LIGHT coating on the bread.

  4. i made this 2dy and it tasted well. But the bottem side was burnt.. I dint hav baking sheets at home so i kept them after greasing the tray.. Is that the reason?

    1. Sounds like either the bottom heat is too high or the tray is too close to the bottom heat. Try reducing the lower heat or raising the tray one notch higher in the oven.

    1. Yes you can, although mixing
      Yes you can, although mixing some wheat flour with plain flour will give better/softer results. Full wheat flour is healthier of course but the result will be a bit dense.

      Hi, yes as long as the yoghurt is at room temperature when you make the dough (thaw it) and it should not taste sharp as most yoghurts tend to develop a tangy flavour when they stay long before being consumed.

    1. Thanks, yes you can reduce
      Thanks, yes you can reduce the salt to just a pinch or so. If you want to leave it out entirely that’s ok too but the bread will taste a little bit bland without it.

    1. W/Salaam. Yes space them out.
      W/Salaam. Yes space them out..as with all yeast breads the dough will expand. If you want them to join then you can make the gap a bit smaller between the rolls. And yes you can make a big loaf out of the recipe.

    1. Your oven heating was not
      Your oven heating was not consistent from the top side of the oven. Make sure you check that or if your oven has a grill then turn that on.
