Viazi/Spicy Mashed Potatoes in Gram Flour

These simple spicy mashed potatoes coated with gram flour and deep fried are a delightful snack to have with any chutney.
Servings 25 Balls

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 500 gm white potatoes boiled and peeled then mashed whilst still warm for best results
  • 1-2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1-2 tsp salt
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • oil for deep frying

Ingredients for Batter

  • 1 cup gram flour/besan flour/chickpea flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic paste
  • 1/4 tsp chilli powder optional
  • water as needed

Instructions

  • Mash the potatoes then add the salt, red chilli powder and lemon and mix together. Taste and adjust if needed, then shape into small balls and set aside.
In a bowl, add the gram flour, salt, garlic paste and chilli powder. Then slowly add water a little at a time while stirring or whisking until you have a smooth and runny batter. Not too watery, there should be a bit of thickness to it. (You can add a bit of egg white into this mix to help the gram flour stick together and gives the potatoes a proper coating during frying, this is optional though).
Heat oil in a deep wok or frying pan. When hot, dip and roll each potato ball into the gram flour batter to coat then gently put this into the hot oil and fry until nice and golden. Remove into a strainer then place on tissues/kitchen towels to blot out excess oil.
Serve hot with coconut chutney or tamarind chutney.

    1. W/Salaam, I would not recommend freezing potato dishes as they release water when thawed. Best to make and serve them fresh.

Hi, you did nothing wrong, it is the type of potatoes you used. There are white potatoes (which are fluffy when mashed) and then there are the red potatoes (which get really sticky when mashed). Try to always get the good flaky white potatoes.
