Naans (Tawa/Stove-top Version)
I've got several ways of making naans and this one is my easiest one. The naans turn out really soft and delicious and they are made on the tawa/stove top…no hassle of baking or using a stone oven/tandoor. For a buttery herb & garlic version, click HERE.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. instant yeast
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 3 tbsp. oil
- 1/4 cup yoghurt
- 1/2 cup milk warm
- melted butter for brushing
Instructions
- Mix the dry ingredients, make a hole in the center and add the oil and yoghurt. Then gradually add the warm milk a little at a time and knead to form a very soft dough, but not sticky. Knead well and then apply a light layer of oil and cover, then set aside for an hour or two.Once it's risen, knock the dough down and divide into 4-6 balls of equal size. Roll each one out and place on a floured surface. You can make it as thick or as thin as you like, It will swell up a bit during cooking so I normally roll it out to a bit more than quarter inch thickness.Heat the tava, then place a naan on it and cover with a lid. Let it cook for 2-3 mins on medium to low heat, then uncover and check. If it has started forming bubbles, gently check the bottom and if it has started browning, flip it over and let it cook on the other side as well. You can cover it again if you like, it helps conserve moisture in the naan so that the result is extra soft.Once browned to your satisfaction, remove, brush with some melted butter and place in a hotpot or cover with a cloth to keep warm until serving.Enjoy with your meal!!
Perfectly soft and delicious!
i was lokking for the naan recepie fr a lona time…thnx i will try …may allah bless u.u share infact teach us….
Jazakallahu khairan!! most of the time free recipes give the wrong measurements but yours give the correct one’s!!! 🙂
Assalamualikum..my dear i just want to know, vch yeast is good bcz i ve never used it..n what if d dough bcome extra soft or sticky?i can add maida?
W/Salaam, my preferred yeast is SAF Instant Yeast. ANd yes you can add maida/plain flour to dough that has become extra soft but always try to add the liquid sparingly when making the dough. Adding too much liquid means you will add extra flour and that will throw off the results. The dough may end up being too hard or too rubbery from all the extra flour that was not needed.
A.a. Fauzia. Can i use whole wheat flour instead of all purpofuse flour?. Shukran for wonderful recipes. Jazakmullah.
W/Salaam, yes you can.
Lovely and easy naans, thank you!
Dey turned out soft n tasty! 🙂
can i make the dough a day before and refrigerate?
Best made fresh or maximum a day ahead.
aslmwk.hwz u my super chef? i want to ask if i substitute instant yeast wid fresh yeast. wat shud b d qty?
W/Salaam, yes you can…just multiply the instant yeast amount by 3 when substituting with fresh yeast. Meaning if the recipe calls for 1 tsp instant, you will need 3 tsp fresh yeast.

Asalam-o-Alikum Fauzia. I
Asalam-o-Alikum Fauzia. I made this yesterday but I didn’t have instant yeast at hand, so I used active dry yeast. I did ‘proof’ the yeast. They didn’t rise as much as I had expected. Does it make a difference which yeast is used? I doubled all the ingredients so according to the recepie that would be 2 tsp instant yeast. I added 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast. Did I add less, if so than how much active dry yeast should I add in place of 1 tsp?
W/Salaam, I personally only
W/Salaam, I personally only every use instant so am not sure why the active dry yeast did not work. When you proofed it, did it foam up?
Yes it did foam up.I made
Yes it did foam up.I made them again yesterday and they worked our perfectly. This time I added a bit more active yeast. I’m thinking the first time around I didn’t have enough yeast because this time around when I searched on it I could replace instant with active dry yeast, websites said yes, but recommended adding 25% more of the active dry yeast to make it equivalent to the instant yeast. JazakAllah for taking the time out to reply.

W/Salaam, when you divide the dough into sections, spread each ball out and put the cooked filling in the centre. Close it up and seal well then flatten it and roll out gently. Then proceed with cooking as you would the regular naans. 🙂

Did you warm the pan before
Did you warm the pan before placing them on it? Sounds like you either might have rolled them out too thin OR overcooked them on the pan. Try rolling them slightly thicker and do not overcook them. You can increase or adjust heat if it is too low.

Hello fauzia, loved all your recipes..can we substitute yeast with baking soda in this recipe..coz my father and I get irritable bowel when using yeast
Hi, yeast is a difficult
Hi, yeast is a difficult ingredient to substitute. Am not sure that baking soda will give the light fluffy airy texture that you would get with yeast. You can try but I personally have never tried substituting yeast with anything else. Let me know how it turns out if you attempt.
