Marble Cake (Baked Without Oven)

You can check the step by step of how I baked this cake without an oven HERE.
Servings 8 inch Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour 180gm
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla essence
  • 2 large eggs use 3 if you have small eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk 100ml
  • 3/4 cup sugar 150gm
  • 1/2 cup butter/margarine 112gm

Instructions

  • Grind the sugar to a powder and set aside.
Sift the flour twice and set it aside.
Grease and line an 8″ round pan and set aside.
Beat the butter with the sugar until light and creamy. Then add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Now add a third of the flour and beat until combined, then add half the milk. Again beat the batter until milk is mixed in. Add another third of the flour, mix it in, and then add the remaining milk. Finally add the last of the flour and the vanilla essence. Beat just until everything is well combined.
Pour a quarter of this batter into a small bowl. Add the sieved 2 tbsp. of cocoa powder and mix well.
Pour the vanilla batter into prepared pan then pour the chocolate batter on top of it. Using a knife, swirl everything together to create a marble effect. Bake using the stove-top method as explained in the link given at the top of this recipe OR bake in a regular preheated oven at 180 C for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean.
Remove from pan and let it cool completely before icing and slicing.
    Enjoy! 🙂

Notes

Make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature for best results.

  1. this is a real easy 1. i wanna try out cakes n stuff i can make without an oven as i stay away frm home n dont have an ovven here..

  2. Looks great! I want to try this soon InshaAllah. How did you make the heart shape on top of the slices? 🙂

    1. Thanks! I sieved cocoa powder over the cake first, then I made a cut-out of a heart in a big piece of paper, placed it over the slice and sieved some icing sugar through the heart cut-out.

  3. Salaams Fauzia. I just made this cake in my oven and while it looks and smells good it hasn’t risen as nicely as it should. Am thinking its the SR flour I used. Can’t I just use AP flour with baking agents instead of it as in your tips? Or maybe i did something else wrong? Having said this, my younger non fasting kids are quickly going through it:-)!

    1. W/Salaam, maybe the SR flour was not very fresh (the baking powder in it must have gone flat). Here is how you can make SR flour at home using AP flour and baking powder.

  4. Aoa. Fauzia it’s really nice to c all of your receipes though I haven’t tried any yet. I will start with marble cake Plz tell me can I use pressure cooker to bake the cake?

Both turned out awesome n sift n no one cud sy k whuch one is from stove n which ones from oven..i need to ask one thing i also put one tsp vinegar in milk to make it butter milk..but i could c no diference in milk.y so?

    1. Try with lemon next time, could be that the vinegar was not very strong. Or give it a bit more time to curdle.

  6. hi,thanks again for the recipe!!!!well my cake was tasty butttttttt…….not realy sure when you say “beat”cos during my mixing up i had left it on the processor to mmix,so was i suppose to fold it or just let it be mixed with the machine processor!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Folding is done only to the flour, the rest of the ingredients are fine to be mixed with the processor.

  8. hi,thanks for your reply on cake, doughnuts and biscuits!!!!inshalllah i try them with ur version……jumaa kareeem

  9. assalamualaikum dear fauzia… Are u mentioning here about the ‘microwave convection oven’ or ‘OTG’ ???? i am sorry, this may sound a funny question but i am new to baking and inshaallah tomrw i am planning to bake this cake for my kids.. Also which oven do u.own? Thank u in advance..

    1. W/Salaam, I baked this cake without an oven BUT you can use any oven that you would normally bake a cake in. Mine is neither a microwave nor OTG (not really sure what that stands for). I have an electric oven. But like I said, any good oven will do.

  10. Fouzia I tried it yesterday and it turned out great alhamdulillah! I’m really happy with the results as a first time baker and on stove top. It remained a little uncooked from middle top. It might be due to my pan? I used a rectangular pan. I’m really motivated to try more of your baking yummies on stove!

    1. Wonderful, thanks for the lovely feedback! Yes you can try a round pan and see if that helps, or bake it slightly longer next time. 🙂

  11. Assalamu Alaikum sister.
Could you tell me about how many cups a quarter of the batter would equal?
    Jazaaki Allah khair.

  12. assalamualaikum.im a new comer to ur blog.mashaAllah all ur recipes are good.i tried gulabjamuns which turned out very good.i’ve a doubt in this cake process.while cooking in pressure cooker should we use gasket?

    1. W/Salaam, thanks for the feedback on the jamuns. And no you will not need to use the gasket/whistle.

  13. how to bake the upper side of the cake baked without oven????
i have tried 2 times but the upper side of the cake remain unbaked.

    1. It’s very difficult to get the top part of the cake to colour when baking without the oven. If you have coal, you can light them, cover the pot and place the lit coals on top to sort of ‘grill’ the top of the cake.

  14. hello fauzia….can i make it in microwave oven??? then how long will i have to bake it? and do i need to pre heat ??

  15. Asak ,

Vn U say light a coal n put it on top. Do u mean while d baking process is on I should put lit coal pieces on d lid??? pls reply asap m.gonna make in.a while now In Sha Allah!!!

  16. Yes during the baking process, midway through it you can place the coal pieces on the lid.

  17. Helo fauzia. Its me again after a long time. I wanted to ask can this recipe be made for a 9″ pan, without increasing quantity. Will the cake be fairly thick to be cut in two sponges? Hoping to hear your reply soon.

  18. Hi, the cake will be somewhat thin but yes you can cut it into two layers. Just that the layers will be thinner than usual.

    1. SR flour is basically plain flour with some baking powder and salt added into it. 1 and a half tsp Baking Powder and a pinch of salt is added to every cup of plain flour and sieved together to form SR flour.

    1. Nope because self rising
Nope because self rising flour which is used in this recipe already contains baking powder.

    1. I am not sure that the
I am not sure that the results would be the same, for one cocoa is darker and richer in colour and also it is unsweetened, whereas milo and ovaltine are both sweetened powders.

  19. made this in pressure cooker.
made this in pressure cooker. one of the best marble cakes I ever had! thanks for the recipe! however the bottom of cake was a little charred which I had to scrape off. I had kept cake tin on the steamer I got with pressure cooker which was like 1 inch height. should I increase the height of stand to avoid burning?

    1. Yes leave a larger gap so the
Yes leave a larger gap so the heat from the burner is not too close to the cake’s base. Thanks for the lovely feedback! 🙂

You can although the cake will not have that lovely aroma that it should have. You can use a bit of lemon zest instead.
