Chocolate Yoghurt Cake
The most perfectly delicious and moist-est cake I have ever baked!! I got the recipe from an awesome friend, made some alterations to it and this is the outcome! Perfectly chocolatey without being too heavy, moist and soft unlike other yoghurt cake recipes which tend to mostly turn out rather dense or heavy. This one was light and fluffy and utterly yummilicious! The cake rose so well that I sliced it in half and sandwiched some chocolate ganache between the layers, which further enhanced an already perfect cake!
Servings 1 8 inch Cake
Ingredients
Ingredients for Cake
- 1 cup sugar grinded to a powder (200gm)
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine 112gm
- 1 cup all-purpose/plain flour 120gm
- 1/2 cup self-rising flour 60gm
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder 60gm
- 1 cup heavy thick yoghurt 200ml
- 1/2 cup milk 100ml
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla essence
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
Ingredients for Ganache
- 1/2 cup whipping cream 100ml
- 150 gm dark cooking chocolate chopped and at room temperature
Instructions
- Pre-heat your oven at 175 C and grease/line an 8″ round pan.For the CakeAdd the grinded sugar to the butter/margarine, and cream together until light and fluffy. Don’t rush past this stage, it is the one that will determine the texture of your final results, so do it for at least 7-10 minutes. Now add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, then add the vanilla essence. Add the yoghurt and milk and beat well, then remove the mixer/machine and take a wooden spoon. Add in the flour ingredients in two or three additions, folding it in after each addition. Do not over mix, just fold until everything is well incorporated.Pour into your pan and bake for about 30minutes or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Leave the cake in the pan for about 5 minutes, then turn it over on a wire rack to cool completely. For the GanacheFor the ganache, I didn’t want it too thick because I wanted some of it to be absorbed into the cake.Heat the cream until it almost starts to boil around the edges. Remove from the heat and add in the chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth.Slice the cake in half, add half of the ganache to the center, place the second half of the cake and pour the rest over the top, letting it drip down the sides. Garnish if you want with nuts or chocolate flakes. I used pistachio flakes and sprinkled some crushed choc-chip cookies on top.Enjoy!!
Notes
-
Make sure everything is at room temperature when you start.
-
Sift the flour with the self raising flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda two or three times just to aerate it, makes the cake very light and fluffy.
-
If the yoghurt you are using is too watery, you can thicken it by pouring it into a cheesecloth/muslin cloth, and tie it in such a way that it can hang for a while, all the excess water will drain out and you will be left with a lovely thick yoghurt.
Dear Fauzia, i have made this cake before and my family loved it to bits. Im planning to make this in a 9″ pan for a party. Can you pls tell me how to increase the ingredients accordingly? Thanks!!
Well this cake was made in an 8″ pan so a 9″ one is just ONE inch bigger, you can just bake the same recipe in the slightly bigger pan. The height of the cake will reduce slightly of course but I would not suggest adjusting the recipe for just one inch difference in the cake pan size.
Can I use just self raising instead of mixing the two flours and adding baking soda? N does the sugar have to b grinded?
No, please follow the recipe exactly for best results. SR flour has no baking soda in it, you will have completely different results if you alter the ingredients.
api what is self raising flour . is it maida ???
For every cup of flour, add 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder and a pinch of salt. Sieve together and use.
k. so that is self raising flour. do we get it ready made too ???
Yes, available ready-made.
Assalamu alaikum wb, sister Fauzia and may you be blessed abundantly for your generosity with this website, amin. My question is: is yoghurt the same as what we call ‘maziwa mala’ in Kenya? Shukran.
W/Salaam, thank you! And yes it is the same thing.
Maashallah i lyk ur dishes, ramadan kareem.
Hi fauzia, I made the cake it turned out really delicious thanks for the recipe but my ganache didn’t really work. I think I made a mistake with the cream. Is whipping cream same as double cream and single cream? I couldn’t find whipping cream at my supermarket, so I used single cream instead but it was very runny and didn’t look right.
Hi, the mistake was using single cream. It is a lot lighter than whipping and double cream. That is why it was runny. Use either whipping cream or even double cream, but not single for making ganache.
Hello..Just a small doubt- in the begining you said to mix grinded sugar, butter and cream.Which cream is used here? How much and why?
Your recipies are great! 🙂
No cream added in this recipe. Creaming the butter and sugar means to mix the two until they resemble cream. It is a baking term.
Ok thank you soo much for the info. Will surely try this one out soon! 🙂
why does cake get hards in fridge after dressing ????
Because it gets cold in there, so the ingredients solidify. Just set it out for at least half an hour before serving, it will be fine.
Assalam fauzia. i would like to make this cake on eid for my family..concerning the yogurt is it sweet yogurt or ‘ yogurt nature sans sucre???
W/Salaam, the natural set yoghurt, sans sucre…that is perfect.
Assalam fauzia
U said- Heat the cream until it almost starts to boil around the edges…
Do we have to whip it first before boiling?
W/Salaam, no don’t whip it.
thank u 🙂
As salam Alaikum Fauziya Baji,
Thank you so much for all your Hard work . Your website helps me a great deal for cooking , as am newly married .
This is the first time am using a Oven 😉 . You have mentioned that we have to bake the cake for 30mins..but at wat temp?
W/Salaam, thank you! Have mentioned the preheating/baking temperature right at the top of the recipe.
aoa plz can u tell there is no cream mentiond in the ingredient but cram is mentiond in method of making cake.kindly reply if to use cream how much quantity shd be used.thanks waitng for the reply .
No cream is used dear. Creaming sugar and butter means to mix the two ingredients until they look like cream. It is a baking term.
hi , can i use curd for this recipe ? the cake looks really tempting .
Hi, yes you can, make sure it is very fresh and drained from any excess water.
baking soda n salt are already added into self raising flour..bt in recipe it is mentioned seperately? plz let me knw fauzia?thnks:)
SR flour doesn’t have baking soda, it contains baking powder.
Fauzia api what is the alternate for heavy thick yoghurt?
You can use curd.
i made this cake today for my hubbys birthday .its soo tasty &perfect.jazakallah.
Hey Dear Fauzia
I need to ask that what is self rising flour??
Hi! Please read this note. SR Flour
hi Fauzia, Could you please telm me if we could skip th eggs to make the cake veg. Will the result be as good? Thanks. You are just great for sharing all those recipes.
Hi, have never tried the recipe without eggs. However I do have an eggless cake recipe, have a look at that for a veg-version. 🙂
Thanks a lot. You are a sweetheart.:-)
Assalam o Alaikum
just wanted to ask that the cream u used in this recipe is the one that is available in tetra packs? what is single and double cream?
because here in America, only table cream is available which is not too thick.
thank you
W/Salaam, not sure what tetra pack cream is, single cream is lighter in consistency and fat content, it’s used mostly in cooking and for pouring, double cream is thicker and heavier, used for desserts mostly. I am sure they are all available in the states, check your local supermarket, refrigerated isles.
Hey can I just omit cocoa powder and make the cake
No, do not omit the cocoa powder.
Hi dear
what is plain flour n rising flour both r not maida kindly tell me too
Plain flour is maida, SR flour is maida with baking powder and salt added into it. 1 and half tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt in every cup of flour.
Asak, can v use stove top method to make ds one ??
W/Salaam, yes.
Asalamo alikuim dear Fauzia
so many people have asked this question but i still don’t get it…what is this heavy yogurt ? Is it regular yogurt …can you tell me any company so i can get a hint…is it a special yogurt for making sweet dishes…
Will appreciate your reply.
Jzk
W/Salaam, since I have no idea which country you are from, I cannot really know what brands or companies of yoghurt are available to you. ANY good fresh natural yoghurt will do. Something that is THICK not WATERY. Nothing special. 🙂
receipe says 2large eggs, do u have a gram value of each egg?? as eggs are differnt sizes.i hv got small eggs, so do i use 3 eggs? jzk
Yes, use 3 eggs if they are small. Have not tried weighing the eggs, I just eye them and estimate. 🙂
hi fauzia i tried this cake it tasted yummy but it fell in the middle wanted to know why?? i didnt have cocoa so used dark chocolate instead….Also it took me around 50 mins to cook completely in my oven…
Hi, thank you. Please refer to this note to see what might have caused yours to fall in the middle: http://www.fauziaskitchenfun.com/cake-mistakes-find-out-why/
salam. canm i use curd instead of plain yoghurt. if so wil it b same qty as yoghurt
thank u
W/Salaam, yes you can use curd. As long as it is fresh and thick. Same quantity.
Salaam,
Can i use something else instead of baking soda?
Thanks & regards
W/Salaam, for this recipe baking soda cannot be replaced.
assalamu alaikum first of all jazakalahair for your hard work and for sharing everything with us your recipes are awesome may allmihgty bless u and your family
A.a Sis! I wanted to ask about the yoghurt.. m in mombasa, the yoghurt we get these days is kind of watery.. can we still use this? Thanks 🙂
oops just re-read the comments above!! should b thick… sorry!
to make 1/2 cup self rising flour (as used in this recipe) , i’ll have to add a little more than half tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt to plain flour??
and as for yogurt , can i use the nestle yogurt? or shud i use the one we make at home? which one will give better results?
Half cup SR flour you will need to use three-quarter tsp of baking powder and a small pinch of salt. Never used Nestle yoghurt so am not sure, as long as it is plain and unflavoured, thick in consistency, it will work.
Salaams, Hope you are doing well, i wanted to ask you if any other variety of icing can be used, if incase i dont want to use chocolate ganache.
JazakAllah.. Thank you.
Regards.
W/Salaam, any frosting that you like will work.
Salam fauzia. I dn have self raising . U have mentioned 1 cup maida n half cup sr. Is it ok if i use half cup more of maida in.place of sr with the addition of quarter tsp b.pdr n salt
W/salaam, yes that is fine but you need to use THREE-QUARTER tsp of baking powder for half a cup of flour.
For a vanilla flavoured cake, can i just omit the cocoa powder and follow the rest of the recipe?
No, this recipe works best in chocolate flavour. But you can give it a try if you like.
salamalikum , my next target is this yoghurt cake, but first i would like to know how it taste? exactly like chocolate cake or yoghurt + chocolate taste. One more thing i am run out of vanilla essence but i have vanilla powder can i use it instead of essence and how much quantity? thanks in advance..
W/Salaam, it has a unique excellent taste. Vanilla powder is strong so use just a quarter tsp or less.
Salaam sis, I hav a microwave oven n can only use silicone bakewares, nw I hav gt n 8″ cakepan’ bt its nt very deep, my concern is what if da cake rises too much n falls round da sides, shud I halve da mixture n bake it n if so 4 hw long? I wantd 2 make it 4 my daughters birthday on Friday. I made ur blackforest gateau 4 my sons birthday, by halving da mixture n baking it separate, it turned out so delicious bt m nt sure abt dis cake…
W/Salaam, sorry but have never baked or cooked in a microwave so cannot be of much help there.
salamalikum, i tried this cake and turned out very very tasty . thanks alot for sharing good recipes..looking forward to more cake recipes. jazakALLAH khair.
Whipping creme is not available in Karachi, it’s single dilute creme, how to make it thick???
If u say to beat then for how long n how to check the consistency n btw after beating well n then bring it to boil wont make it thin again?? Please help.
Am not sure how single dilute cream works but do try and check for any HEAVY cream for whipped cream. And What did you mean beating then boiling please? I never beat then boil cream! You can boil the cream with chocolate THEN beat it after it has completely cooled down.
I got it, thank u so much for the help.
By beating n boiling I meant to say that my creme is not thick so can I beat it first n then boil but I know I will beat later.
N I found powder whipping creme to add in milk n it says it will from thick one after beating well, I hope it will work.
Any alternate of baking soda?? I can’t find that.
Maybe you know it as bicarbonate of soda. It should be very easily available at all supermarkets and even in some regular grocers.
I got it, sorry for confusing u up. Can u please temme what’s substitute of baking soda?? Is baking soda n white soda same thing??
Need help soon m already to bake…..please
N after slicing warm cake do I need to bring it at room temperature spray sugar syrup the apply ganache???
Baking soda is also known as bicarbonate of soda. It is white in colour but am not sure if it is also known as white soda.
As mentioned in the recipe, allow the cake to cool completely before slicing. No need for sugar syrup.
Thank u, it turned out awesome:)
how can i make it in microwave oven?
Sorry I don’t bake in the microwave.
Can I use soft sugar instead of grinding the sugar? Thanks in advance
Yes that is fine.
I just baked the cake and forgot one of the most important ingredients- baking soda!!!!!! such a pity…. came out very dense and heavy…. getting stuck to the back of your mouth horrible feeling…. Got out ingredients again and baked another(yes I am obsessive like that!!!!!). Just thought that I should put my two sense worth and share my experience because so many people keep asking if the baking soda is a must. Oh yes it is. Thank you Fauzia. Will update you on my second attempt.
Just having it. Made the ganache… awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!
Hi Fauzia, QUick question, for how long can I keep this cake in an airtight container or in the fridge? Nothing much is remaining…
Depends on the weather, a day in warm weather otherwise refrigerate. 🙂
How long in refridgeration pls?
Up to a week. 🙂
Dear
In the first line we are mixing cream with butter how much cream? you didnt mention..plz tell me
Thanks
No cream is used. Creaming is a method of mixing butter with sugar.
Thanks <3
Salam dear sis,may I know which brand whipping cream do you use.
W/Salaam, I use Millac Gold. Brands of whipping cream differ for every country so depends on where you are located, best to ask at your local supermarkets as to which brand is best where you are.
Can i use stovetop baking for dis cake ?
Yes you can.
What is self rising flour called in market?I didnt get it 🙁
It is actually known as self rising flour. You can make it at home though, for 1 cup of SR flour, simply add 1 and a half tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt to every cup of plain/all purpose flour, sieve together and use.
Assalamu Alaikum…u have mentioned several times that instant coffee powder bring out more taste..can i use coffee powder in this recipe and when will i use it?
W/Salaam. Normally coffee goes well with chocolate flavour so if you like you can add a little powder into the cocoa for this recipe.
Salaamu alaykum. Can I use Greek yoghurt for the cake? Jzk
W/Salaam, yes that is fine.
Asalam,
I’ve tried this recipe and the cake turned out excellent. Thanks for sharing this recipe!!
Hi Fauzia,
As always your recipes are perfect!
Two ques
1.Can I sub the butter with oil in this
2.wat determines if a cake recipe will use oil or butter /margarine
Thank you! For this recipe, butter would be the best option. I guess it is a matter of personal taste really, and also most quick-fix cakes (like my moist cake recipe) require oil as it makes it easier coz you get to skip the whole ‘creaming butter with sugar’ step. 🙂
Thank you for quick reply.I’ve been shying away from butter coz of precisely that step (creaming )ad I don’t have an electric appliance to aid in it.ure explanation is very sufficient 🙂
fauzia..do we need to use a mixer…cant i just mix wth a spoon….
Best to use a mixer especially during the creaming of butter and sugar to get a good fluffy result.
Hi!
can i knw what do you mean but yourget is it curd ? or sweet curd im so confused
Not sweet curd. Normal fresh thick curd.
Yupppppieee thnx dr i love ur recipes
Salam sister, thanx for this recipe looks DELICIOUS mashallah!! Can’t wait to try it, I just have a question about the sugar, is the 1st ingredient (1 c sugar ground to a powder) the same as powdered sugar, also known as icing sugar? Can I use store-bought powdered sugar (which also contains a bit of corn starch/corn flour)or would it be best to grind regular sugar to a powder? Jak I appreciate the feedback!!!
W/Salaam, best to grind the sugar to a powder. The cornstarch in icing sugar might give you different results.
jAk sister thanks alit I’ll do that then inshallah! =)=)
Oops I meant ALOT (not alit)! 😉
Hello Sister!
Can you please tell me any specific brand name for the yoghurt, so that I can get a clear idea of it (I would like to mention that I live in Bangladesh (Dhaka)).
Is it white and sour yoghurt?
Hi! Since am not from Bangladesh (nor have I ever been) I wouldn’t know what brands are available. It is the normal plain white not very sour fresh yoghurt.

Salam. i had a confusion… why is there two types of measurement? 1 cup sugar is 200g anbd 1 cup flour is 120g. which one to follow?
W/Salaam, the measurements
W/Salaam, the measurements are ALL accurate. A cup of sugar is heavier than a cup of flour. Like when you have a bag of stones and a bag of feathers, they will not be the same weight even if the bag is the same size, got me?
Im just getting acquainted
Im just getting acquainted wit bakin n its measurements. About the second part of your comment, do you mean in place of the self rising flour you want to add 1 tsp baking powder in the half cup of flour? You will only need three-quarter tsp baking powder not a full tsp.

W/Salaam, if you use good quality and FRESH baking soda there should be totally no smell or taste at all. It is only when the baking soda is old or of an inferior quality that it gives a weird smell.

With this recipe I use the creaming method whereby the butter is whipped with the sugar. It needs a soft butter for proper creaming, oil will give a completely different texture. Why don’t you make the moist chocolate cake which uses oil instead of butter? 🙂 Otherwise you can try this with oil but am not sure how the results will be.

i made this cake for my husband’s birthday and it was the first one that I made totally on my own. It was a success! So much people like it. I never tasted a homemade chocolate cake that has such a Nice chocolate taste! It worth the hours I took to make it as I am really slow at cooking. It was so soft! I add chocolate buttercream instead of the ganache as I didnt have chocolate. Even when I keep it in the fridge, it became more firm so easier to cut and still so good or even more better! Thank you so much!

W/Salaam, not sure what you
W/Salaam, not sure what you mean by it being like a dessert. Is it very moist? Maybe it needed more time in the oven?

I personally have never worked with fondant so am not sure if this will be ok, it should be fine though as it is quite a solid cake in spite of being moist.

Salam Fauzia can i use castor sugar instead of powdered sugar?

Alhamdulillah I tried this recipe and it came out well especially the texture -jazakallah khairah- but I have some doubts. I used the rice measuring cup for measuring the ingredients but when i measured it in grams, it differed greatly. for example i took 1 cup of flour and measured it in grams and it was 90 grams- not 120. I didn’t know what to do, so i preferred the cup measurement and used that instead of weighing in grams…
I don’t know whether this would have been the cause for the odd taste in the cake but the texture was really awesome….
secondly, i want to know whether ganache is a part of the recipe or optional? coz when i ate the cake without the icing, it didn’t taste sweet…..
W/Salaam, measuring cups vary
W/Salaam, measuring cups vary so much in size, but the standard 1 cup of flour is around 120g not 90g so I would check for a better set just to get accuracy in your baking results. The ganache really does make this recipe, I would strongly recommend including it. 🙂
jazakallah khairah! so
jazakallah khairah! so instead of cup measurement, can I consider only the measurement in grams? coz I’ve heard people say that we have to use the same cup to measure all ingredients..
Yes that is totally fine, you
Yes that is totally fine, you can stick to the gram measurements for accuracy. 🙂
Made it twice, the first time I didn’t have chocolate for the ganache but it was really good. The second time, I made the ganache also and it was amazing, chocolaty and moist without being too sugary. I’m making it for the third time today, in Shaa Allah it will be good as usual. Your explanation are really helpful.
