Servings 3 people

Ingredients

Ingredients for Chicken Marinade

  • 500 gm boneless chicken breast cut into small cubes
  • 2 tsp. corn flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp. ginger paste
  • 1 tsp. garlic paste

Other Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp. oil
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp. ginger paste
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp. chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp. chilli garlic sauce
  • 2 tbsp. freshly chopped mint
  • 4 tbsp. freshly chopped coriander leaves
  • 3 green chillies chopped (adjust to taste)
  • a few curry leaves
  • 1 tsp. garam masala
  • 4 tbsp. water
  • few drops red food color optional
  • 1/4 cup thick plain yoghurt whipped
  • sliced onions for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Marinate the chicken cubes in the marinade ingredients for at least 4 hours or up to overnight.
Heat oil for deep frying in a deep pan. Lower the flame, and add in the chicken pieces slowly. (Do not over crowd the pan). Fry for not more than 3 minutes. Do not over-fry, it will result in hard chicken. Remove and set aside to drain on kitchen towels.
Take another pan, add oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add in ginger, garlic, green chilies, curry leaves and fry for a minute. Next add black pepper powder, cumin powder, chili powder, and salt to taste. Then add chili garlic paste, chopped mint, chopped coriander leaves, garam masala and fry for about 1-2 minutes on medium flame.
Add little water (a few tbsps.) and cook for a minute on medium flame. Add red food color, mix well and throw in the fried chicken pieces. Mix them well so that the spices coat nicely. Add yoghurt and mix well to coat the chicken. Increase the flame to high and cook till the yoghurt is absorbed fully. Taste and adjust salt/spices. Turn off the heat.
You can garnish with sliced onions, salad etc. and serve hot. Goes well as a side dish for fried rice, fries etc.
    Enjoy! 🙂

  1. nice job..i have tryed many of your recipesits really great in taste..thank you..keep on going..

  2. what if we don’t add an egg for marination instead increase the quantity of corn flour?

    1. I’ve personally never tried without the egg but if you like, you can try and experiment with half the amounts and see how you find the results. Let me know if you do! 🙂

  3. How to use the additional ingredients in the recipe… are they added at time of marination or later after it?

  4. Dear Fauzia, Asalamwalaykum
I’ve tried your Al-Baik recipe and it was a hit and I just made this Chicken65 dish which made another HUGE HIT with my In-laws. Please keep making and posting these recipes! This makes our lives much easier and get more respect from others!! Especially picky others!! 😉

  9. Hi in the additional ingredients you have written salt to taste, about how much do you normally put in as i cant taste it beacuse of fasting. Jazakillah

    1. I would estimate about half a tsp of salt, although tastes vary for salt so I hope it will be to your personal taste. Add half a tsp and then just before having iftar, give it a taste and see if you need to sprinkle a bit more on top.

  10. salaams fauzia have you got any recipes for fried rice to go with this chicken 65,jazakallah, as im going to make it today inshaallah, ur recipes are so easy and perfect mashaallah

    1. W/Salaam, please check the international folder for either Chicken Fried Rice or Egg Fried Rice.

  11. salaam sis…i have marinated the chicken and fried them using the chicken manchurian recipe and kept it in the freezer….but now i want to make chicken 65 using dose frozen marinated chicken pieces…..wht do u suggest?will it work?

    1. W/Salaam, it doesn’t have to be an exact amount, just a small amount, like between 5-10.

    1. Depends on preference, you can leave a bit of gravy if you like…I prefer this dry.

  12. salmaz fauzia..great recipes mashallah. quick question the plain yogurt is that cooking yogurt that is tangy..the pakeeza yogurt or plain yogurt from supermarkets? also how long do u have to whip it and is it necessary? thanks

    1. W/Salaam, am not familiar with those yoghurts, just a simple plain yoghurt is good enough. Whip until smooth and use.

  13. salams fauziya…this one looks sooo yummy!!
want to make it for iftaar tday, had a qsn..can i roast
the chicken in the oven instead of frying it?

    1. W/Salaam, thanks! Yes you can although it may end up being a bit too dry. Frying ensures the chicken remains moist and tender.

  14. Asak, I used liquid red color, maybe 4 drops, color wasn’t appetizing at all. It wasn’t a nice bright red like ur picture, but a dark pink. Hubby asked if the chicken was cooked properly when he saw it :/ plz tell me exactly what brand/type of coloring u use. also, is the prefrying the chken in cornflr/egg mixture necessary?

  15. Yes the pre-frying is necessary, not sure about the colour brand you used, I use McCormick’s food colouring.

  16. Assalamualaikum fauziya..I. Have tried ur recipe today..n got good results..thank u so much..may Allah bless u…

    1. Nope, never tried adding vinegar to this recipe. I sometimes squeeze some lemon over the chicken before having it.

  17. Absolutely delicious recipe! Thank you so much for your time and effort in creating this fab website, sharing your wonderful recipes and if that wasn’t enough…your time answering questions! May Allah SWT bless you for your kindness xx

  18. Salam Fauzia… I made it yesterday and it turned out very nice. But I just want to ask you that this chicken is somewhat sweet and spicy. And I think the chicken is sweet because of the chilli garlic sauce. Is there any other alternative or may be I can put tomato puree instead, rather than putting the sauce? Please reply.
    Thanks.

  19. W/Salaam, actually chilli garlic sauce is not normally sweetened, maybe the version you have is? If so, then avoid it and use regular sauce and some garlic paste. Or if you like puree, you can use that instead, along with a bit of garlic.

    1. The reason is not confirmed, some say it is because originally the recipe required 65 ingredients. Others say in the original restaurant which invented this recipe, the dish was listed at number 65 in the menu so people would request the chicken number 65. Who knows lol. 🙂

  20. Is it necessary for it to be marinated for just a half hour or can I leave it for 3-4 hours too?
    Thanks!

I tried chicken 65 everything seems to be fine except that the chicken is hard? I did not overfry them nor did i keep them for more than 3 minutes, what would this be caused by? If you can assist, I would greatly appreciate. Thanks alot!

    1. W/Salaam, normally the main
W/Salaam, normally the main reason for hardness in chicken is over-cooking. Try cooking for even less time next time. Or cut the cubes a bit bigger. 🙂 Make sure the oil is hot.

W/Salaam, you can check the chicken manchurian recipe for it’s sauce alone and use that sauce with this dish. Or make a separate sauce to serve with this dish as to be honest it does taste really nicely when it is on the dry side.

Assalamun Aleykum. I made this yesterday and it turned out very nice, very very pleased with the taste, though the yoghurt reduced the red color, which i need to be careful next time, In Shaa Alla. Jazakallah for all the yummy recipes. I wanted to ask if I can fry the chicken a day or night before, and finish the rest the next day. (this will help especially when I’m making more than double qty as above).

W/Salaam, thank you. Yes you can although they will not be as crispy as those fried fresh.

    1. No, for this you will need the fresh coriander, you can omit it if you do not have but do not substitute with the powder as they have very different flavours.
