Apple Juice

Servings : Serves 2

I’ve always been of the firm belief that nothing beats HOME-MADE fresh juices. No preservatives, you get to control how much sugar goes into them, and of course, the health factor of making something yourself as opposed to some random factory somewhere.

It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, that’s quite accurate when it comes to the number of nutritious benefits that can be found from the consumption of apples!!

Here are a few:
– Bone protection from osteoporosis especially in women
– Reduces asthmatic symptoms like wheezing, especially in children
– Prevents Alzheimer’s
– Lowers bad cholesterol
– Cancer prevention
– Diabetes management
– Weight loss

…and so many more!!

Ingredients

  • 3 apples ** Each apple will give you approximately 1 glass of juice.
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 a pinch of salt
  • water as needed
  • sugar or honey as needed

Instructions

Any apples, red or green…whichever you have on hand. As many as you want.

** Each apple will give you approximately 1 glass of juice.

Wash and then chop the apples. Do not peel them. Just cut them up into big chunks. Discard the cores. Place the apple chunks in a pan and add just enough water to cover the apple pieces.

Squeeze in a few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Cover the pan and simmer on low heat for about 20-30 minutes or until the apple pieces have softened completely. Keep checking on them every once in a while whilst they boil and top up a bit of water if needed. Using a wooden spoon, mash up the apple pieces as they begin to soften.

Once the apples are done and well-cooked/mashed, sieve the juice through a strainer. You can discard the peels but the soft mush that remains of the apples can be used as apple sauce (tastes awesome served as an ice-cream topping!) or it can be blended into the apple juice. If you want to add the pulp into your juice, just discard the peels (they will be easy to pick out of the soft pulp at this point) and then blend the pulp with your strained juice until well-combined.

Dilute the concentrated apple juice to the consistency of your preference by adding water and sweeten with either honey or sugar.

To dissolve the sugar faster (if you’re using sugar as the sweetener), pour the warm juice into a blender jug, add the sugar and blend until combined.

Refrigerate until well-chilled and serve!

Enjoy!! 🙂
