Brown Bread Dessert

Yes! This recipe really includes BROWN BREAD! You wouldn’t know it unless someone told you though, because the end result has no hint of bread flavor in it! The taste was fantastic and sooo much like a moist and delicious black forest! Only with a slightly healthier twist to it. Plus it literally takes moments to prepare!
Servings 6 people

Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf of a day-old brown bread sliced
  • 3/4 cup grinded sugar
  • 1/2 cup assorted nuts crushed
  • 1 1/2 cups Cadbury's drinking chocolate powder
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp. vanilla essence
  • 1 ½ cups fresh cream mixed with half cup whole milk and 2 tbsp. icing sugar

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 cup whipping cream plus 1 tbsp. icing sugar whipped to soft peaks
  • sliced strawberries or strawberry sauce

Ingredients for Strawberry Sauce

  • 2 cups fresh or unsweetened frozen strawberries
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1-2 tsp. cornstartch
  • 1/3 cup water
  • red food colouring optional

Instructions
 

  • Wash and hull fresh strawberries. If using frozen strawberries, thaw before using. Chop the strawberries into small pieces. Reserve a third of the chopped strawberries.
    Mix water and cornstarch until dissolved, pour into a pan and add the strawberries and sugar. Simmer until the sauce thickens. Pour the sauce into a blender and blend until smooth, then pour it back into the pan.
    Add the reserved third of chopped strawberries and simmer for another minute. Finally add the vanilla essence and some drops of red food colouring if you like.
    Refrigerate until chilled before serving over your dessert.
    Now on to the making of this AMAZING dessert.
    Grind the bread slices and pour them into a bowl. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, drinking chocolate powder, nuts and 1 tsp. of the vanilla essence. Stir these dry ingredients together well.
    Take a dessert dish or individual bowls. Put half the bread mixture into the dessert dish, drizzle half the fresh cream/milk over it and then press it down into a layer using the back of a spoon. Add some strawberry slices or sauce and half of the softly whipped cream. Repeat with the remaining bread mixture, followed by the fresh cream/milk mixture and the whipped cream. Top with some more strawberries/sauce and some grated chocolate.
    Chill for a few hours, tastes even better the following day.
    Serve and enjoy!

  1. salaams…the recipe says 1 1/2 cup fresh cream with 1/2 cup whole milk…for drizzling, for that can i use the whipping cream? Or do i hve to use double cream? I am a bit confused.

    we are talking about plain simple brown bread right… not dried… so we grind normal one day stale bread?

    salaam sister.regarding sugar,you ask for grinded sugar, do you mean icing sugar.

    1. W/Salaam, no just grind
      W/Salaam, no just grind normal sugar to a powder. Icing sugar normally contains cornstarch which is not needed for this recipe.
