Chicken Steak

Sumptuously moist, flavourful and tender chicken steak with a light creamy pepper sauce, side of mixed veggies, some fries and garlicky buttered toasted rolls.
Servings 3 people

Ingredients

  • 500 gm boneless chicken breast trimmed and pounded lightly to flatten - marinate chicken in the ingredients below for at least 2 hours.
  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • salt/pepper
  • 1 tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 tbsp. soya sauce
  • 1 tsp. garlic paste
  • 1 tsp. ginger paste
  • pinch of turmeric powder
  • pinch of tandoori masala
  • 1 tsp. red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp. red chilli flakes
  • juice of half a lemon

Ingredients for Light Creamy Pepper Sauce

  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tbsp. flour
  • 1 tsp. corn flour
  • 1 tbsp. black pepper
  • pinch of garam masala
  • salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp. fresh cream or sour cream
  • 1 small onion chopped finely
  • 1 cup chicken stock

Instructions

  • I have served it here with Stir-Fried Veggies and Garlic Bread.
    For the Chicken
You can either:  Grill the chicken steak on a bbq grill on both sides until done (about 12-15 minutes per side)
    OR
Heat a hot steak pan or heavy griddle, add 2 tbsp. of oil to it and fry the steak on medium heat for about 10 minutes per side. Then increase the heat and give it a final fry of about 3-4 minutes per side or until it begins to slightly char. Do not crowd the pan, fry a few pieces at a time.
For the Light Creamy Pepper Sauce
Heat the butter, add the onions and fry until golden. Add the flour, pepper, garam masala and salt and cook on low heat for 3 minutes, then slowly add the stock and the corn flour. Cook until the stock thickens slightly, then add the cream and stir together. Let this simmer for a few minutes, adjust taste and turn off.
For the veggies, I boiled the carrots and peas for just about 5 minutes, until they are halfway done, then drain the water. Added the sweet corn from a can. Then in a pan, heat 1 tbsp. of butter, once it melts add the combined veggies and stir fry on low heat for a few minutes. Sprinkle salt, pepper and a dash of cumin powder. Turn off the heat and serve! 🙂
Serve your steak with the sauce drizzled over it, and with the sides of your choice! Enjoy!

Notes

The steak can be served with rice, or mashed potatoes, or even roasted baby potatoes…whatever you like best. 🙂

  1. Salaam, I need to ask is it ok if i dont put chili powder in this? my father dont want anythng doing with chilli…

    1. Yes totally ok to omit it, spice can always be adjusted according to taste. 🙂

    1. Either dissolve a stock cube/chicken cube in water or simply boil some chicken and use the soup as stock.

  2. Hi.. Can we use knor chicken cube ..? Is one chicken cube enough for it? .. I am preparing it today so please le me know as earliest as possible ..
    Thanks a lot :))

    1. Hi. Is that for the stock? If so, check how much water is needed to dissolve the cube and see if it matches amount of stock required for the sauce recipe.

  3. I am using 3 boneless chicken breasts.. So wat will be the quantity of ingredients in which I will marinate them?.. Shall I put 3 of them in 3 different bowls n matinate with the above mentioned ingredients?
First time making a steak so have no idea at all.. 🙁

    1. What is the collective weight of the chicken breasts you are using? I think the measurements given here should be enough for what you have, so simply make the marinade and add it to all the chicken in one bowl.

  4. Thank u soo much .. It turned out really yummy .. Jazak Allah
How to make mushroom white sauce used in steaks ?

  5. Assalam allikum Fauzia, I was actually searching for peri peri chicken recipes when I stumbled upon your website and must say your recipes are absolutely amazing. I’m making the peri chicken today. Anyway I basically went to Pakistan in April & ate pepper steak from a few different restaurants. Since we’ve come back I’ve been searching for recipes on how to cook it on you tube but all the recipes contain alcohol so couldn’t make them. I can’t begin to explain to you in words when I just found this recipe on your website, I’m so thrilled & just sent my husband off to get me the steaks so I can try them tomorrow…lol! Just on a final note wanted to say thank you

  6. Salaam, i was wondering if it would be okay if i used chicken legs instead? Also, would it still be okay if i served it without the sauce? Thank you in advance.

  7. Salam fouzia how r u? I just wanted to ask that can I use chicken tenders instead of breasts n in souce which flour u used self- raising or all purpose?

  8. Salaams. Can u pls tell me if we add salt in the chicken marination pls becoz I’ve just marinated it but the soya sauce hasn’t made it salty enough. Thanku

    1. W/Salaam, I normally follow this recipe exactly and it gives perfect results. If you are worried you could reduce the amount of salt to your preference and can always sprinkle some over your meal if it feels like it turned out less salty. 🙂

  9. Salaams, can I omit the soy sauce as I ran out of it? I would like to make this right now:) thanks for the great recipes!

hi.i love the look of the steak and will try it.i wanted to ask one thing.I usually bake the steak to avoid oil.i do it for 15 min.But it gets leathery.any tips?

    1. Make sure the oven is VERY
Make sure the oven is VERY HOT when you place the steak inside it. That will help seal the chicken instantly so that moisture is retained inside as it bakes.

  20. Hi,
    Hi,
    A few questions:
    1) Can I use just water instead of chicken stock?
    2) I have never made steak before; what exactly does “trimmed and pounded lightly to flatten” mean?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi, water will be much less
Hi, water will be much less flavourful for the sauce. Trim off the fat from the piece of chicken and then flatten it SLIGHTLY by hitting it gently with a heavy object.
