Sloppy Joe Burger

Servings : Makes 4-6 burgers

Few dishes can be as satisfying as a steaming hot sloppy joe! A sloppy Joe is an American dish of ground beef, onions, capsicum, ketchup and other seasonings, served on a burger bun. I sometimes also add a bit of grated cheddar over the filling. YUM!

Ingredients

  • 500 gm lean beef mince
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 big onion, chopped
  • 1 big red pepper/capsicum, chopped
  • 1 big green pepper/capsicum, chopped
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger paste
  • 1 tsp. vinegar
  • 2 tsp. black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp. chilli powder or red chilli flakes
  • 3 tbsp. steak sauce
  • 1 tbsp. sugar, preferably brown
  • 6 burger buns, cut and slightly toasted
  • some grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

Heat oil, add the onions and fry for a few minutes (don’t brown the onions). Add the ginger and garlic pastes, fry them for a minute then add the mince, and sprinkle some salt and pepper over it. Fry until the mince changes color, make sure you break down any lumps that form using your spoon. If any water comes out of the mince you can spill it out. Once the mince is dry, add the chopped red and green pepper.

Cook together for a few minutes then add the tomato paste, chili powder, sugar, steak sauce and tomato sauce. You can add a bit of water too, about a quarter cup. Cover and cook on low heat until the meat is done and the gravy is very very thick. Add the vinegar or lemon, give it a stir and cook for another minute or two. Adjust salt and spice to your taste. Turn off the heat.

Serve generous helpings of the mixture on your sliced buns, you can sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top.

Enjoy!

This is a messy dish so keep a few napkins handy whilst you dig into these deliriously yummy burgers! 😀
