Cake - Baked Without an Oven

I attempted it and alhamdulillah the results were better than I ever expected!! The cake was light and fluffy, really really soft and delicate with a perfect crumb texture. All in less time than it would have taken in an oven!

Instructions

  • Here is the recipe: Marble Cake
Here is the step by step description corresponding to the numbered pics.
Picture 1:  Place a rack or stand in a big heavy EMPTY pot. Make sure the pot is dry and completely clean otherwise if it has any oil or water it will smoke.
Picture 2:  Cover the pot with a tight lid and turn the heat on high for 5 minutes. This is to pre-heat the pot in preparation for the cake.
Picture 3:  Open the pot, careful it will be hot in there. Place your cake pan gently on the rack/stand.
Picture 4:  Cover the pot once more and let the cake start baking! First keep the heat on high for 5 minutes, then lower it to medium and continue cooking for another 20 minutes. This is for an 8″ cake size, it will take slightly more time if the cake is larger or less time if it is smaller.
Picture 5:  Open the pan after the baking period, and check if the cake is done. The top will be solid and a skewer inserted in the center of the cake will come out clean.
Picture 6:  Turn the cake over on a rack gently and remove the greaseproof paper. As you can see, the cake is done!
Picture 7:  This pic is to show you how soft the cake is. I placed a knife under the cake and lifted it, and as you can see the cake is literally bending just with the lift of a knife-tip, it is THAT soft!
Picture 8:  Once the cake was cooled, I flipped it over to show the marbled top.
Picture 9:  Look how soft my cake is!! Perfect cake without the use of an oven!

    1. Have never had a problem with this method, make sure you use a good sturdy pan.

    1. A simple chilli sauce or ketchup dip, or even mayonnaise is perfect for popcorn prawns.

    1. Yes you can, don’t use the whistle/pressure valve. Just close the pressure without adding the valve on top.

  1. Dear Fauzia,

i made this marble cake receipe on charcoal stove, and it tuned out very nice.Taste was too good, only the top was little hard…please advise me how to make soft or is it ok..reply

    Thanking you

    1. Hi and thanks. Have never baked in a charcoal oven but it seems the top was overbaked, try reducing the amount of coal you use on top.

  2. Brilliant. I have just one question, When a empty pot is placed on stove, after a few minutes it tends to smoke and then gets on fire. So, isn’t the same problem will be faced there? or can we pour some water on the pan?

  3. Have never had that problem with this method, use a sturdy pot and do not add any water in it. It should be just fine.

  4. Salaams fauzia

I wanted to know if we can use the blender machine to beat the cake batter if we dont have the cake machine.

    1. W/Salaam, you can use a whisk or a wooden spoon. It will take longer than the cake machine but the results will be good. Have not tried making this cake using a blender machine.

  5. Can we make buns & paties using this method? Can you please share their recipes too with using pan ? Thanks.

    1. You didn’t share the recipes of buns & paties using pan. We will highly appreciate if you add it here. Thanks

  6. Dear Fauzia,

I made a Marble Cake again, Mashallah it came to so nice. I tried on charcoal believe me it was better then before, like your picture.Thank you once again…please keep it up..Nazzima

  7. Salam dear. Pray all well with you. Was wondering if the zebra cake would turn out using this method? Made it countless times but I guess my ovens the problem. Pattern never turns out right 🙁 and also.. The cake doesn’t rise much right? Grease proof paper can be skipped or not really? Lol..lots of qstns!! Thanks 🙂 tc!

  8. W/Salaam, actually the cake should rise unless the baking powder is not active. About the pattern, maybe the batter is too thin? Try adjusting the liquid and reduce it slightly to have a slightly thicker batter so the pattern shows more clearly. Am sure you can bake the cake without the oven but have not tried it myself.

  9. salam.you ladies are wonderful.just want to commend your efforts for a job well done.you’re an inspiration!!

  10. That is because the same exact method and procedure is used as the pizza recipe. Use any of the buns/breads recipes in the breads folder. 🙂

  11. W/Salaam, well anything that can hold up the cake which will allow some heat to pass through.

    1. It means I personally have not tried substituting for this recipe. You can if you like but I cannot predict how the results will be.

  12. Does the lid has be to be very tight? Like similar to Pressure Cooker? Or can it be any Big Pot that we cook food in?

  13. In pressure cooker,we dont want to put the rubber valve also?please clear it..your recipes looks really yummy..Maasha Allah

  14. I need some help. I do not have an oven, i do not have the proper moulds etc for baking, no greasing paper etc…however, i managed to bake something following your method and am so grateful to you. but when the cake rises, the top cracks and the end result is a mountain like cake with canyons and cliffs. 🙂 never plain like yours.
    any suggestions?

  15. W/Salaam, yes you can bake anything using this or the pressure cooker method. The top colour may not be as golden but the results will be good.

  16. Dear fauzia, glad to find
Dear fauzia, glad to find this link. What if i dont have a cake rack can i just put in a pizza pan or any other pot inside the pot?

    1. Yes that is fine just make
Yes that is fine just make sure the cake pan that you are baking is raised so the cake doesn’t burn from underneath.

      1. Thanks for your reply but I
Thanks for your reply but I still don’t get you. What are u referring to raised pan as? all of the baking pans and pizza pans are usually flat from the bottom.

        1. You said you do not have a
You said you do not have a cake rack. The function of that cake rack is to raise the cake pan so it is not touching the bottom of the BIG POT. So if you do not have a rack, use anything else that will make sure whatever you are baking is not touching the bottom of the BIG POT otherwise the bottom will burn. I hope that cleared it now.

          1. okay I got it now, it should
okay I got it now, it should just be raised in any way. sssssoooo I can either layer the pan with stones or I can use any casserole that can be exposed to stove and turn it upside down then put the baking pan on top of it right? 2 more ques: can i use a really really big aluminium pot? the pot I have in non stick form is not ideal for this purpose coz its not that deep and the process requires enough space in terms of depthness.. n my last question is unfortunately the baking tin I have is broken.. so can i use the small non stick pan covered with aluminium foil from the bottom?

Thanks a lot. waiting for your reply of my all three questions 🙁 n sorry i asked a lot

          2. Yes you got it now. Yes you
Yes you got it now. Yes you can use an aluminium pot. Not sure about the non-stick pan covered with aluminium, I guess you can give it a try and see. I hope it does not get ruined though as it will be going through dry heat.

  17. I will try it, but before I
I will try it, but before I ruin some ingredients, I have few questions,
In comparison to the length of the outside pot, how tall should be the rack? And the space left above after putting the rack and the mold how much should that be? I mean if the amount of space over and under (or may be around) playing any role? Plus some sites say that you should cover the base of the utensil with gravel or sand for better result….
    do reply

    1. Well there should be at least
Well there should be at least 3 inches between the dish being baked and the top/bottom of the pan just so that there is room for the hot air to circulate without burning the dish. I personally never add any gravel or sand or stones, but you can if you want. 🙂 Just make sure to preheat everything well before you put your dish in there to bake.

      1. I tried your method, and my
I tried your method, and my cake turned out very good. I even tried the method for making pizza. That turned out good too. Thanks a lot.
One request tho, can you share a cheese cake recipe. I mean the healthier version. On some bbc cooking channel I once saw a recipe with used lil cream cheese and Greek yogurt. I mean if you have something like that.
It is a good site keep it up, and good luck!

    1. Did you use SELF RISING flour
Did you use SELF RISING flour as mentioned in the recipe? Did you raise the cake pan by placing something under it so that it is not directly on the heat?

Aoa, Plz tell if u have ever tried baking in oven proof dish, that pyrex one

        1. I would not recommend it for
I would not recommend it for this method because I personally have not tested this out. There is a risk because of the direct flame right under the pot, it may cause your dish to shatter.

  27. Hi Fauzia,
    Hi Fauzia,
I have bookmarked this recipe long time ago. Today, finally, I’ve just got to work and I have to say the result was excellent and unique. Even better than oven baked cakes.
Thank you soOoOo much for sharing.

  29. This method for baking a cake
This method for baking a cake on the stove top worked perfectly!!! I had a cake ready to bake and found out my oven isn’t working : ( I used my turkey roasting pan that has a removable rack in it. I turned the roasting pan so it was sitting over both the front and back burner on one side of my stove. After I heated it for 5 minutes, I baked the cake in the glass Pyrex dish that it had already been prepared in. The cake had a bottom layer of peaches, juice, and flavorings with cake batter on top. I was tempted several times to lift the lid to check on it, but knew that would spoil the heated environment. It was very hard to trust and wait. However, the cake was perfect after 5 minutes on high and then 15 min on medium. YUM! Thanks for the photos and many answers to reader comments.

  30. Salam

    1. Same with a pressure cooker,
Same with a pressure cooker, I normally do not add water, just be sure not to use the whistle during the bake. Again, if you are worried, you can use water.

Four years down the line and I got equipment and an oven. Now you are the source of all my Swahili and Mombasan recipes. I no longer have to wonder why my neighbors houses smell so good. God blesses you for making available recipes that are simple and accessible to a young girl in Mombasa. God bless you
