Flour Tortillas

Flatbread tortillas have been eaten for many centuries in Mexico, where they are a staple. More recently, other countries have begun producing them to serve the expatriate Mexican market and the growing demand for Mexican food, particularly in North America, Europe and Eastern Asia. Mexican tortillas are commonly prepared with meat to make dishes such as tacos, fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas. (source for description: wikipedia)
Servings 8 flour tortillas

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbsp. ghee or shortening
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • warm water or milk for kneading

Instructions
 

  • Mix ingredients together, add the warm water or milk and make a soft dough. Knead it well. Let it rest covered for about 20 minutes, then divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
    Roll each one out as thin as you can. Once all are rolled out, heat a tava and place the tortillas one at a time, cooking each briefly for a few seconds on medium-high heat then turning it to cook the other side until bubbly and slightly golden. Don’t overcook them as you need them to be soft and pliable, not crisp or hard.
    Keep the ready ones covered in a hotpot or under a towel to keep them soft. Serve fresh by rolling some filling in them and serving as fajitas or in whichever way you like!

  1. i tried this recipe but my dough ball was just not rolling out… it was tooo elastic i tried it with flour, on my palm with rolling pin but it was just not stretching at all and when got a little big after soo much effort and i put it on tawa it got back to a small size. Kindly let me know what to do about this..

        1. Strange, I guess it could be that the dough needed to be kneaded some more. Try doing it by hand and see if that makes a difference. Make sure the dough is well-kneaded and soft.

  2. i tried this recipe and the tortillas turned out to be just perfect n the kids really enjoyed it!and the good thing was th wraps stayed soft and fresh till the next day. Thanks for sharing the recipe FAUZIA.

  3. Simply awsome recipes you have.Just tried this tortilla recipe with half the ingredients and it turned out awsome.i used hands to prepare the dough and not the processor and left it for 10 minutes to set. Jazakallah sister.

    Salams..will these tortillas be crispy if I fry little bit on pan..the supermarket one I get becomes crispy..want to know if home mades also will give he same result.i ll b doing it on Eid in sha Allah

    would these turn out the same if we were to use atta (wholewheat flour) instead of white flour? as a healthier alternative?
