Turmeric Milk (Haldi Doodh)

Servings : Serves 2

Turmeric milk, also known as Golden milk or Haldi Doodh is a vibrant bright golden coloured milk-based hot beverage which is considered an Ayurvedic medicine. It consists mainly of a combination of turmeric (haldi) and milk (doodh), however it is common to find variations that contain a few other spices and some sort of sweetener.

Apart from its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric milk is loaded with antioxidants that can provide plenty of health benefits, ranging from a healthier brain and heart to stronger bones, improved digestion and a stronger immune system. It is also a well known home-remedy for cough, congestion and colds.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (any of your choice)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (adjust sweetness to your taste)

Instructions

Put the milk in a small pan, add all the remaining ingredients. The main ones are milk and turmeric, and some honey is recommended too. The remaining spices are entirely optional as per your own taste. Bring to a simmer on low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Take it off the heat and strain into cups. Add a small pinch of cinnamon powder on top. Serve immediately.

Golden milk can also be made in advance and stored in your refrigerator for up to five days. Simply reheat it before drinking.

  • As salaam waleikum girls. Made this recipe several times. I didn’t caught flu since 2 years since I’ve tried this recipe. Everytime I start feeling unwell, like having a sore throat, I make this milk and drink it once or twice a day until I feel better. At the beginning of covid, I had fever, cough and went to the doctor, I took antibiotics and I wasn’t well. Ended up having fever and cough for a whole month. I started feeling better and get cured by drinking this everyday twice. May Allah bless you girls <3
