Servings : one 8" cake
You can check the step by step of how I baked this cake without an oven HERE.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour (180gm)
- 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla essence
- 2 large eggs (use 3 if you have small eggs)
- 1/2 cup milk (100ml)
- 3/4 cup sugar (150gm)
- 1/2 cup butter/margarine (112gm)
Instructions
Make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
Grind the sugar to a powder and set aside.
Sift the flour twice and set it aside.
Grease and line an 8″ round pan and set aside.
Beat the butter with the sugar until light and creamy. Then add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Now add a third of the flour and beat until combined, then add half the milk. Again beat the batter until milk is mixed in. Add another third of the flour, mix it in, and then add the remaining milk. Finally add the last of the flour and the vanilla essence. Beat just until everything is well combined.
Pour a quarter of this batter into a small bowl. Add the sieved 2 tbsp. of cocoa powder and mix well.
Pour the vanilla batter into prepared pan then pour the chocolate batter on top of it. Using a knife, swirl everything together to create a marble effect. Bake using the stove-top method as explained in the link given at the top of this recipe OR bake in a regular preheated oven at 180 C for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean.
Remove from pan and let it cool completely before icing and slicing.
Enjoy! 🙂
how to bake the upper side of the cake baked without oven????
i have tried 2 times but the upper side of the cake remain unbaked.
It’s very difficult to get the top part of the cake to colour when baking without the oven. If you have coal, you can light them, cover the pot and place the lit coals on top to sort of ‘grill’ the top of the cake.
hello fauzia….can i make it in microwave oven??? then how long will i have to bake it? and do i need to pre heat ??
Hi, I never bake or cook in the microwave so cannot know how that works.

Helo fauzia. Its me again after a long time. I wanted to ask can this recipe be made for a 9″ pan, without increasing quantity. Will the cake be fairly thick to be cut in two sponges? Hoping to hear your reply soon.
Hi, the cake will be somewhat thin but yes you can cut it into two layers. Just that the layers will be thinner than usual.
hai dear pls tel me what kinds of pan i can use 2 bake it?can i use steel …
I prefer aluminium. 🙂
Can u pls guide the difference between “self raising flour & plain flour”
SR flour is basically plain flour with some baking powder and salt added into it. 1 and a half tsp Baking Powder and a pinch of salt is added to every cup of plain flour and sieved together to form SR flour.

I am not sure that the results would be the same, for one cocoa is darker and richer in colour and also it is unsweetened, whereas milo and ovaltine are both sweetened powders.

Can i skip Vanilla Essence???
Can i skip Vanilla Essence??????????
You can although the cake
You can although the cake will not have that lovely aroma that it should have. You can use a bit of lemon zest instead.
