10-12 small rolls

Pav means 'a small loaf of bread'.

These simple buns/rolls (pav) are the perfect accompaniment for Pav Bhaji (buns and veggies), Vavda Pav (potato buns) or any other meal that requires rolls/buns. They can also be shaped individually and used as burger buns. They are soft and buttery, utterly delicious.

3 1/2 cups
all-purpose flour
1 cup
warm milk
2 tbsp.
milk powder
1/2 cup
warm water
(might use less)
1 tbsp.
4 tbsp.
4 tbsp.
melted butter
1 1/2 tsp.
instant yeast
1/2 tsp.
egg for egg wash before baking

Sieve the flour, then add milk powder, sugar, yeast and salt. Then add the oil and butter and the egg, and mix together. Now add all the warmed milk. Start kneading together and gradually add the warm water a little at a time. You might not need it all, so add it sparingly until your dough is nice and soft. Knead for a good 8-10 minutes. The more you knead it the softer the buns will be.

Touch a bit of oil with your fingertips and apply all over the ball of dough. Cover in a bowl and set aside for 40mins to an hour for it to double in size.

Punch it down, and break off bits of dough and shape each of them into a ball. You should get about 10-12 small rolls.

Grease your pan/pans with butter and dust with some flour. Place the rolls in it and try to get them close to each other so that there are no or very little spaces in between.

Cover the pans and set aside for a second rise, about half an hour to rise.

Now apply egg wash on the buns, preheat your oven to 180 C and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is nice and golden on top.

The egg wash I prefer to use for a lovely glossy finish is made this way. Take 1 egg, beat it with 1 tsp. of milk. Brush on the bread/rolls/buns and bake as directed! :)

Brush them with some butter when they are out of the oven, and keep them covered under a towel to maintain softness. Enjoy! :)

Hi, is your yeast INSTANT or another version, please check? What you can do is dissolve the yeast in warm water first before adding it to the other ingredients. Make sure the water is WARM not hot.

Tried these Lovely Buns and i definately got a promotion from my Husband!!!
This is the 1st receipe that have tried from your site 10and i was soooo overwhelmed!!
Although mine were baked in 10 mins, i wonder why??
As soon as they turned goldenish i took them out, afraid of them getting burnt and they were perfect.
Any idea why it was done much sooner?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

It depends on the size of the buns, 10 minutes is fine for most ovens if the buns are smaller. Thanks for the lovely feedback. :)

Hi Fauzia!
Want to desperately try these out, but the yeast I have is in form of granules n not powder, n does not dissolve with the rest of the ing. Plssss help! :)

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Yes you can.

Fauzias can we use the same recipe to make burger buns?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, yes you can although results will be better if you mix maida with wheat flour (half and half)

salam.can i use whole wheat flour(aata) instead of maida.

assalamualaikum Sister Fauzia, MashAllah! your recipies r awsome n perfect. I don't cook well. But ur recipie will make a chef InshAllah :-D
would tell me where to place the tray while baking bun, rose rolls etc?top or middle rack? I burnt my 1st batch of rose roll ;-( and now being over cautious
. plz help.
jazakillahu khairan.

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, thank you. Use the middle rack always, this is the ideal place for even heat distribution. :)

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, yes that is fine otherwise check my jam buns in the breakfast folder.

is it ok to fill these buns with cheese, jam or some other filling and then bake them?

Hello ,

i would like to know if you can give me the mesure in grams please?

Aswk Fauzia,

I made these rolls today they came out nice but there was egg smell coming from the buns :( so please tell me where i am going wrong??

what if i skip egg in the recipe?? what is the purpose of eggs in the recipe??

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, strange that there was an egg smell. Was the egg fresh? Did you knead the dough properly to make sure the egg was well combined? Could be the egg wash that caused the smell? In any case you can leave out the egg and use 2 tbsp yoghurt.

do the eggs or yogurt (if used in place of eggs) have to be at room temperature?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Not necessarily, even straight from the fridge works fine. If you have the time you can get them out earlier.

Hi Salam
I tried this yesterday...result was ok..but a quick question is that when I prepare the dough it
Was sticky ....was that the rite consistency???

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, sounds like you added a little too much liquid during kneading. It should be soft and slightly sticky but manageable when handled.

Thanks for the reply...will correct it next time!!

Salaams sis...your site is simply awesome and I have tried many dishes and all turned out well...just want know..if I want to make these buns for stuffing (burger bun)...can I use self raising flour instead of normal flour? Will it be soft?thank you.

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, thanks! I have not tried making these with SR flour simply because that flour contains a lot of baking powder which is not needed for this recipe. I use the same buns for burger buns and they turn out great. :)

Thanks for your reply one of the above comments you have mentioned that to make burger buns use maida and wheat flour half to half...does wheat flour your meaning is atta flour we use for chappati? Pls clarify..thank you again..

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Actually for some funny reason the comments got shuffled. You can make burger buns out of any flour. That response was to someone who asked if they can make the burger buns out of wheat flour and I advised them to mix wheat with maida for best results. But it would be better with just maida. :)

Assalamualaikum wrwb,

Can I brush the buns with olive oil after baking?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, you can if you do not mind olive oil flavour on the buns. :)

I followed the receipe but my flour did not rise after keeping for 1 hr, what should we do if flour for some reason does not rise will we be able to make buns or we have to prepare new batch

salams i love u recipie but cn i hve the recepie of the bugger bun dough

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Will add it soon.

Excellent recipe.. Jazakallah.. Really appreciate your efforts!!

Can I use all in 1 pan instead many bans?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

I did not understand what you mean.

salamz sis!! can i use magarine instead of butter?? and can i add the butter without melting it??

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, yes you can but make sure to MELT it first.

Assalam. May i make the bun one day before i'm going to use it?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam. Yes that is ok.

Hi fouzia,
i made this reciepes but top not became golden colour what is the mistake

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Hi, no mistake. Maybe your oven does not heat properly from the top, just make sure to check or turn on the top grill if it has a separate setting.

Slmz Fauzia! I made these a few times and they are an ABSOLUTE HIT! I was surprised at how incredibly soft they were. Everyone loved them, especially my mom. We had them with our Haleem the other day and they went so well together. Thanks for all the amazing recipes. Can't wait to try out all the other amazing things you have here. Much love from Canada :)

Can these be used as burger buns?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

These turned out just perfect.
