Serves 4-5

The gingery spicy warmth of this dish is fantastic, this is definitely one of my fave chicken dishes! :)

chicken, skinless, cut into 8-10 pieces
1/2 cup
julienned ginger
fresh tomatoes, chopped
1 tsp.
tomato paste/puree
green chillies, chopped
1/2 tsp.
turmeric powder
2 tsp.
roasted and crushed cumin
1/2 tsp.
coriander powder
salt to taste
1 tsp.
red chilli powder
1 tsp.
red chilli flakes
1/4 tsp.
garlic paste
1/4 cup
plain yoghurt
1/4 cup
1/2 cup
(drain the excess after cooking)
chopped coriander for garnishing

Heat oil, add the ginger (reserve a few slivers of ginger for garnishing), 1 green chili chopped, and garlic paste. Once the aroma is released, add the chopped tomatoes and the cumin, turmeric and coriander powders. Cook on medium heat whilst stirring until all the excess moisture from the tomatoes is gone and the oil gets released. Now add the chicken pieces and sprinkle some salt. Turn the heat up on medium-high and fry the chicken until color begins to change..

Now sprinkle the red chili powder and chili flakes. Add the tomato paste. Give it a stir and reduce the heat to medium. Whisk the yoghurt and milk together, then add them into the pan. Bring to a simmer, adjust salt, cover the pan and set the heat on low. Let the chicken boil gently until tender. For extra gravy you can add some warm water.

Finally add the remaining chopped chili and garnish with coriander and some more ginger strips.

Serve!! :)

finger crossed going to try this dish today :)

I buy mine ready made. You can peel and grind tomatoes then cook them with a pinch of salt and sugar until all the water is gone. Then use accordingly.

Can this be made with boneless chicken breast as well?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Yes you can use boneless cubes.

gonna try it tonight :)

Yes I whipped very well and also mixed it well with milk

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Very strange, try again maybe it will work out better. Add more of the curry in a separate bowl, mix the cream in until completely smooth then turn it back into the pan. Hopefully that will work. Make sure the milk/cream are NOT cold and the curry is not too hot.

Lovely recipe ,but one question ..when i added the mixture of yoghurt and milk to the gravy it curdled making it look really bad..and i also made sure while adding it that the flame was slow and i poured in a little at a time pls tell me what went wrong?? Thanks

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Did you whip the yoghurt to make sure it was very smooth before adding it to the mixture?

Approx. 1kg of chicken for above recipe??

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, thank you. To julienne is a description on how to chop something. It means chopping into thin strips. :)

I made this with boneless chicken, had it with pooris. It was so yummy ! God bless you for sharing your recipes & helping others out :)

I made dis today.. it ws yummy.. just dt my gravy finished before the chicken.. n i dint want to make it too thin . Cn u tell me some tip on how to make more gravy with the same amt of chicken... thanx ... taste ws perfect

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

You can double all the rest of the ingredients (aside from the chicken) and that will give you double the gravy. Thanks for the awesome feedback!! :)

I made this tonight, it was great, just took a while for the gravy to reduce though! great dish..

for this recipe..if the chicken is 1 kg, then would 500 gms of tomatoes be sufficient?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Luv you!

Absolutely amazing dish!!!! Turned out just like the one at Barbecue tonight (a famous restaurant in Karachi) No words to express my gratitude. May allah bless u always.

Hi fauzia. I wanted to make this dish for 7-8 people. Should I double all the ingredients except the chicken? Would that effect the taste? Please reply!

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

This recipe will suffice 4-5 people so you will need to make one and a half of the recipe. And if you increase on the chicken you need to increase on the rest of the ingredients too.

asak, when you say 5 tomatoes, is it large or medium sized ones. here in USA we get really big ones like the size of our palm. JazakAllahu Khair

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, medium ones. :)

Assalaamu Alaykum, Made this for a dinner party a couple of days back. First attempt and the result did not disappoint. Looked and tasted smashing :).However, I blended the tomatoes to give it a smoother texture. Thank you for a wonderful recipe.

Salam. Turned out really delicious! JazakumAllah Khayr. Waiting for more of such recipes, chicken with lots of tasty gravy... as this is what my family prefers over fried/dry/baked chicken...

If we take 2 whole chicken as my family is big ... so wat will b ingredients quantity?

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

Then double the recipe ingredients.

Yumm yumm

Can you please provide the recipe of garlic chicken?

Salam Fauzia. Can we omit tomatoes from this recipe? It is for medical reason :(

Fauzia's Kitchen Fun's picture

W/Salaam, the tomatoes help build the sauce for this dish, but yes you can omit them although the dish may not be as saucy.
